WILLIAM N. JAY, OF MOSCOW, IDAHO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 21, 1910.
Patented Feb. 7, 1911. Serial No. 556,815.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM N. JAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moscow, in the county of Latah and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful \Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and one of its objects is to provide a simple and durable tool of this type which can be quickly adjusted to -fit any size nut.
Another object is to provide novel means for locking the movable jaw in adjusted position.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings forming part of this specification the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a section on line A-B Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the fixed jaw of the wrench the same being formed at one end of a shank 2 there being transverse shoulders formed by the jaw as shown at 3, these shoulders constituting guides. A rib 4: is formed on one side of the shank 2 and close to and parallel with a shoulder 3. Screw threads 5 are located upon the shank for a short distance and are adapted to be engaged by a nut 6 which may be circular as shown.
An elongated tapered slide 7 extends transversely of and surrounds the shank, this slide bearing against the shoulders 3 and having a slot 8 for the reception of the rib 4. A movable jaw 9 extends from the slide and is similar to the jaw 1. Teeth 10 are formed on one face of the slide and are adapted to be engaged by similar teeth 11 formed on a wedge block 12 which is loosely mounted on the shank and between slide? and'nut 6.
The operation of the wrench will be obl i l vious. By loosening nut 6 the teeth on wedge 12-will become disengaged from the slide 7 and said slide can therefore be moved to shift jaw 9 toward or away from the construction and arrangement of the parts withoutdeparting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
hat is claimed is z- 1. A wrench including a fixed jaw, a-
shank extending therefrom, a slide .surrounding and movable transversely of the shank, a jaw upon the slide, a locking block movable longitudinally of the shank and means adjustably engaging the shank for binding the block upon the slide.
2. A wrench including a fixed jaw, a shank extending therefrom, a locking block movable longitudinally of the shank, a wedge shaped slide interposed between the block and the fixed jaw, a jaw extending from the small end of the slide, andmeans adjustably engaging the shank for binding the block upon the slide.
8. A wrench including a shank, a fixed jaw thereon, a locking block, a tapered sleeve interposed between the fixed jaw and block and shiftable transversely of the shank, a jaw upon thesmall end of the sleeve. and means adjustably mounted. on the shank for clamping the sleeve between the block and fixed jaw.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. JAY.
