Description

f RSL. DETHLOFP.
r GHALK HOLDER.
APPLIOATIONVPILED JULY 6, 1908.
Patented Jan. 31, 1911.
@Ni-@E FREDERGK L. DE'IHLOFF, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
CHALK-HOLDER.
Application filed July 6, 1908. Serial No. 442,165.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. DETH- Lorr, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk- Holders, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to chalk-holders for chalking billiard and pool-cues.
\ it has for its object the production of a simple, inexpensive and durable holder which will receive and properly hold cakes of chalk of different sizes, and it also provides for the easy insertion of the chalk into the holder and the ready removal of the chalk therefrom.
It also has for its object the provision of simple means for pressing the chalk against an abutment provided by the particular construction of the holder, and the provision of means to prevent powdered chalk loosened from the cake of chalk by manipulation thereagainst of the cues from passing over the edge of the holder and dropping onto the Hoor.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a billiard-table having my improved chalk-holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the chalk-holder. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4t is a detached perspective view of the chalk-retainer. Fig.
5 is a longitudinal section taken on line 5 5, F ig. 2. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on line 6 6, Fig. 2, the adjusting-screw being broken. Fig. 7 is an enlarged section through the chalk-clamp and the inner end of the adjusting-screw.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
The reference letterA designates a billiardtable and B the chalk-holder. The latter comprises essentially a support or bracket C, a chalk-receptacle D, a funnel or cup-shaped entrance-member E surmounting the chalkreceptacle, and a chalk-retainer F adjustable within said receptacle.
The support or bracket is secured to the underside of the billiard-table by suitable fastening-means, such as screws passing through lugs G extending laterally from the inner end of the support. The latter is of substantially U-formation so that the handles of bridges used in the game of billiards may be supported thereon, and at its outer extremity it has the chalk-receptacle D which has openings Z at opposite sides for the ready insertion of a cake of chalk H thereinto. n
Passing through the bottom of the receptacle which is provided with a threaded opening I for the purpose, is an adjustingscrew J provided at its lower or outer end with laterally-directed linger-pieces K and having its upper or inner end rotatably secured to the chalk-retainer F. Said chalkretainer therefore travels with said screw but does not rotate with it. To accomplish this, the inner end of the screw is reducedI in diameter to form a shoulder L and this reduced end is passed through an aperture in the retainer and projects from the upper side of the latter where it has a washer M applied and has its extremity countersunk into a beveled opening in said washer, as at N. Said retainer comprises a cross-bar O which rests upon the shoulder L of the adjusting-screw and yielding upstanding side gripping-arms P which straddle the lower end of the cake of chalk and grip the same at diametrically opposite points. The chalk-retainer is held against rotation by the side walls of the chalk-receptacle so that at all times the chalk is held in position to be removed through either of the openings in said receptacle. Although the cake of chalk herein shown is cylindrical, the retainer will as readily retain a square cake or a cake of any other formation and the yielding arms thereof provide for accommodating cakes of different sizes.
The funnel or cup-shaped entrance-member E is formed by outwardly-Haring walls and it has an opening Q in its bottom somewhat smaller in diameter than the distance between the walls of the chalk-receptacle so that overhanging-portions R are provided which serve as an abutment for the upper end of the cake of chalk, which is held firmly thereagainst by the adjusting-screw J. The tips of the cues are brought in contact with the chalk through the opening Q. The rim of said funnel-shaped entrance-member is directed inward, as at S, to form an annular trough T which receives the powdered chalk loosened from the cake of chalk when chalking the tips of the cues. This guards against l the powdered chalk passing over the edge of 1 the entrance-member and dropping onto the floor, and as it is necessary, owing to the shape of the sides of the regulation billiardtable, to position the chalk-holder at an angle to the vertical in order to conveniently insert the ends of cues into it this feature of my invention is of considerable importance. lt is to be noted Jthat the inner face of the entrance-member is continued downward Without breaks or projecting parts to meet the lower face of the abutment so that the tip of a cue placed against the portion of the chalk exposed through said member, cannot under any circumstance be loosened or torn Jfrom the cue When chalking the same.
Having thus described my invention, what claim is,-
A chalk-holder comprising a support having a chalk-receptacle at its outer end provided With opposite exposed openings and a funnel-shaped entrance-member surmounting said chalk-receptacle and having an opening in its bottom smaller in diameter than the space between opposite Walls of said chalk-receptacle to provide an abutment, a chalk-retainer in said receptacle held against turning by the opposite Walls or' said receptacle, and an adjusting-screw threaded through the bottom of said receptacle and having its upper end rotatably secured to said chalk-retainer, said adjusting-screw serving to torce the chalk in said retainer in Contact with said abutment.
in testimony whereof, I hereunto a Xed my signature 1n the presence ot tivo subscribing Witnesses.
