JEWELERS STAKING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, LOREN RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Carthage, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelers Staking- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in ewelers staking tools, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereofFigure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, Fig. 8 is a plan view of the circular table, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hollow plug. Fig. 5 is a detail of a portion of the staking tool, showing the mechanism used for inserting the balance staff, and Fig. 6 is a detail of the inserting device.
The present embodiment of my invention, comprises a support composed of a base 1, and an overhanging arm 2, the arm being provided with a vertical threaded bearing 3, through which is threaded a hollow sleeve l, the said sleeve being externally screw thread ed, and provided at its upper end with a milled wheel 5, for convenience in manipulating the sleeve.
Upon the base is mounted a circular table 6, the said table being rotatable on a pin 7 arranged within an opening 8 in the base, the upper end of the pin being headed'as at 9, and engaging a countersink in the table whereby to prevent upward movement of the same.
The table is provided with an annular se ries of openings 10 therethrough, such openings being of gradually increasing diameter as shown in Fig. 3. Each of the openings extends entirely through the table, and is adapted to be brought into register with an opening 11 extending through the base as shown in Fig. 2. For convenience in manipulating the table, the edge thereof is milled as shown in Fig. 1.
The pin 7 is provided near its lower end with a cylindrical opening 12, therethrough, through which extends the eccentric portion 13 of a shaft 1 1 mounted horizontally in the base, and prevented from longitudinal movement by a screw 15 threaded through the base and engaging a groove 16 in the shaft.
The outer end of the shaft 15 is provided with a handle 17 for oscillating the shaft.
It will be evident from the description, that when the shaft 14 is oscillated into one position, the eccentric portion of the shaft will depress the pin 7, thus locking the table 6, to the base.
A centering staff 18 provided with a corrugated upper end 19, is adapted to be in serted in the hollow of the sleeve 1, and the sides of the lower end of the staff are beveled as at 20, the end of the staff being provided with a depression 21 therein for receiving the balance staff and centering the balance wheel in a manner to be presently described.
A hollow cylindrical plug 22, is provided for engaging the balance wheel to firmly clamp it to the circular table, the said plug having its lower end enlarged as at 23 to form a base, and having the inner edge of its upper end slightly beveled as at 2 1, to receive the lower beveled end of the sleeve. The lower edge of the plug is provided with a pin 24*, which is ada ted to engage one of the holes in the circu ar table.
In operation, the balance wheel hub is inserted in one of the annular series of openings in the circular table, the centering staff 18 is inserted through the sleeve, and the circular table is rotated until the opening in the end of the centering staff is engaged by the staff of the balance wheel. The circular table is now clamped to the base, the centering staff is withdrawn, and the plug is placed with its base on the balance wheel, the pin 24f being inserted in an adjacent opening of the table. The centering staff is again engaged with the staff of the balance wheel, and the milled wheel is turned to depress the sleeve into contact with the plug. This wheel is turned until the plug is firmly clamped, after which a slight blow with a hammer or other instrument on the end of the centering staff will dislodge the staff of the balance wheel.
The invention is especially adapted for holding the balance wheel firm and solid to the circular table, in order that the staif may be withdrawn or inserted in the wheel without destroying the balance of the wheel.
hen a new stall is to be inserted, the mechanism shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is made use of, the said mechanism comprising a stump or punch 25, of substantially conical shape as shown in Fig. 6, and provided onits base with a cylindrical projection 26 and at its apex With an opening 27 The opening 27 is adapted to receive the new balance staff, while the cylindrical projection 26 is adapted to be inserted in the hollow of the screw as shown in Fig. 5.
In the operation of inserting the new staff, the staff is placed in the opening of the balance wheel, and the stump or punch 25 is placed in position with the upper end of the staff inserted in the opening 27. The cylindrical portion 26 of the stump is now inserted in the hollow of the screw, and the milled wheel is turned to gradually force the balance stafi through the wheel.
I claim 1. A device of the class described, comprising a base provided with an overhangin arm, said arm having a threaded vertica bearing, a horizontal table rotatably mounted on the base below the bearing, said table being provided with an annular series of openings of different sizes, and adapted to receive the hub of a balance wheel, means for locking the table to the base, a hollow sleeve threaded into the bearing, a hollow plug having an extended base for engaging the balance wheel on the table, the upper end of the plug being adapted to receive the lower end of the sleeve, and a centering staff movable through the sleeve and the plug and provided in its lower end with an opening for receiving the stafi of the balance wheel.

A device of the class described, comprising a base provided with an overhang-ing arm, said arm having a vertical threaded bearing, a table rotatably mounted on the base below the bearing, and provided with an opening for receiving the hub of the balance wheel, means for locking the table to the base, a hollow sleeve threaded into the bearing, a hollow lug having an extended base for engaging the balance wheel on the table,
the upper end of the plug being adapted to receive the lower end of the sleeve, and a centerin staff movable through the sleeve and the p ug and having an opening to receive the staff of the balance whee 3. A device of the class described, comprising a base provided with 'an overhanging arm, said arm having a threaded vertica bearing, means on the base for supporting the balance wheel in a horizontal position, a hollow sleeve threaded into the bearing, a hollow plug having an extended base for engaging the balance wheel on the table, the upper end of the plug being adapted to receive the lower end of the sleeve, and a centering staff movable through the sleeve and the plug and provided with an opening for receiving the staff of the balance wheel.

A device of the class described, comprising a base provided with an overhangim arm, said arm having a threaded vertica l bearing, a horizontally arranged table below the bearing, said table having an opening to receive the hub of the balance wheel, a hollow sleeve threaded throu h the bearing, and a punch having a conical portion provided with an opening at its apex to receive the staff of the balance wheel, and on its base with a cylindrical projection for entering the lower end of the sleeve. i
5. A device of the class described, comprising a support for a balance wheel, a fixed bearing above the support, a hollow sleeve threaded through the bearing, a hollow plug for engaging the balance wheel on the support the upper end of the plug being adapted to receive the lower end of the sleeve, and a centering staff movable through the sleeve and the plug.
