UNITED sTArnns PATENT OFFICE.
l BUnoLAn-TRAP.
To all whom it may concern:
l the boxiby clips 4.2 is our 'iinproved tra Be it known that We, JAMES Y. Vv'nnnicl; and PATRICK F. DAILEY, citizens ot the United States, residing at 'St'. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State' of Minnesota, have invented .certain-new and useful Iniprov'enients in Burglar-Traps, ot" which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in burglary preventive devices, its-object heingparticularly to provide improved means in connection witha )ewel box or other receptacle :tor trapping the 'hand of a person attempting to remove the contents of the box.
. To this. end our invention consists yin the featuresof construction, combination and Aarrangement of parts lieremafte'r p particularly described andclaimed. i
In the accompanying drawings forming p'art of this specification", Figure l is a perspecth'e view of a jewel box fitted' with our improvements; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a false top for the box; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a box shown opened and the trap sprung and showing the false partition wall broken away to. better expose the features of construction of the trap; Fig. 4 is a view of an inside catch for the door of the box; Fig. is a sectional view oil the same; Fig. 6 is a perspective view ot the trap .'11, set position; F 'T and 8 are side elevations of-.the trap in sprung position; Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the swinging moveinentsof the trap; Fig. 10 is a detail ot' 'a key adapted to be used in unlocking the'.
trap, and Fig. l1. is .a vertical cross section of the rinvention illustrating the operation ofthe parts. I r
lIn the drawings A 'represents a jewel'bo-x supplied with a suitable enc door 2 inside,`
of Wliichis arranged a jewelry drawer 3. The door 2 may be l formed with spring catches 4; to engage Vwith studs 5 carried by springarms 6 secured to the inner .sides of. the box. The spring arms G will be forced inwardly to release the catchesfbv ,pressing the studs 7 exten-ding -t'lnonglropeningsV in' the sidewalls of the 'box 'underneath the outer fabric covering 9 so as' tobe hidden from'vvie'w. This preventsstrangers 'from knowingfhow to open the door.
The trap comprises arms 11 and 12, thjar 12 having hinge support n13 upon tho-.Hoorlever 2l). between the ]a.ws to tree Ahimself will only;
screwing 'downwardly the pin Seeurel upon the-horizontal tlooru-I. ofi.'

and the arms having pivotal connection 1l..`
The arm l1 is formed with an opening 15 to receive adjacent sides ofl the jaws 16 and 17, which jaws are pivotall)v supported in the vertical posts 148. lVhen in set position as'-i-ndieated in Fig.- 6' one post 1S will extend through the opening l5, a coil spring 1.0 surrounding the vpost between the end of the arm 1l and the bottom l0. In order tu set the trap jaws we-provide the ordinari' pivotallyy supported lever 20 adapted to ex- 1 tend over one end otthe jaw 1G as inrlicated in'Fig. 6 andinterlockwith a pivoted trip 2l secured to the underside of the false partition wall Q2. To ass stijn setting the trap we provide the horizontal .shaft 23 journaled upon the floor lOand having an oii'set end 24 to engage wit-l1 tlie underside of the trap-2l andilni'ving, a handle-25 at its opposite end.
' In order to hold the trap sprung 'and also to increase the grip ot' the -jaws as the same 'horizontal row ot teethI 2S inside the arm 122-..
A second-lever l29 has pivotal support 30 are pulled uponwe provid-e a lever 26 liav'-, ,I
inside the arm 12 and engages with teeth 31 upon the inner side of the lever Thus when the trap jaws areA 'sprung the. end of the lever 2G will engage with the teeth28 and be locked'against disengagement bythe y Any etl'ort et the partv `caught tend. as thel jawsniove 'closer together, to

.through the opening 3l to litt the leVerQQ.
and the lower endlof the lever Eli then liftfed gagement with the Vupper end .i5 lever 2G.
In opera'tmn tllejaws may be set as shown inFignF. the shaft Q?, thon being turned ,downwardly outA of engagement. with the j"tripXZ-'l-" The trip 21 will-hold lthe 'false bottorawQl raised into osition shown in Fig.4 y, l.' andnpouthis false ottoni 'the jewels may be fplacedV to 'deceive ay burglar. A: the
"person then 'attempts to-tak'ethe jmvelry impossible to withdraw the hand from the jaws without the use of the key 32 and iin 33. In order to prevent the box being y bodilyr removed a suitable chain 36 maj be employed connecting the same with a suitable support.
In order` to electrically sound' an alarm a circuit 3T ma)T be. employed with a switch 38 and an arm 39 carried by one of the jaws in position to engage with and hold the switch open againstthe ,tension of the spring 40 while the jaws are set. 'hen the jaws are sprnngto 'carry7 the arms 39 away from the switch the springe() will close the switch and sound the alarm.
lith the trap set as' shown in F G the 'false bottom covers the trip 2l closing the opening in the top of the -box jas indicated in Fig. l and when the trap is sprung the jawsare carried upwardly past the false bottom into the position shown in Fig. 3.
The false bottom il shown in detail in Fig. 2 is suitably positioned in the top of t the box and is preferably formed of flexible material overlapping the edge of the partition wall 22 when the parts are in normal position. lWith the parts in the' position shown in Fig; lala slight downward pressure upon, the false partition Q2- will disen gage the trip 2i from the'. interlocking end of the lever 2O whereupon the upward yspring pressure v tty jainst the jaw lt' will throw upward -thelleai'er 2U and allow the jaws 16 and 17 toclose. In the set posi.- tion shown in Fig-'6 the interlocking ot' the lever 20 and trip 2l ,will hold the spring jaws set.. and the press-ure of the spring pressed jaw 16 against the inner side of the lever Q0 Willhold said lever and trip into interlocking engagement.l The jaws' and cooperating interlocking trip and lever it will be noted are arranged to coperate'in a .similar manner to the corresponding parts in an ordinary s ring trap of the same character. T he false ottoni 4l is of such thin, flexible material that it will be thrown upward by *the jaws as they pass upwardly past .the partition wall 22 to sprung position, ,as indi-4 cated in Fig. 11.
lYe claim as our invention:
false wall. a tra) underneath said wall,'.a tripping device or said trap releasable'by the movement of said wall, and lconcea'il-fed means for holding said trap sprung; 'l
i l l ping mechanism releasable by the movementy of said wall, concealed lockingy mechanism' for holding said trap sprung, and manually actuated means forreleasing said locking mechanism.
,', 3. In combination with a receptacle a false wall, a spring jaw trap concealed thereby, tripping mechanism releasable by* the movement of said wall, concealed lever arms for holding said trap`sprung,.and means for disengaging said lever arms'.
t. In combination with a receptacle of the classi described, a false wall, a. trap concealeid thereby, tripping mechanism releasable by the movement ofsaid walha pair of spring pressed pivotalljT connected arms for holding said trap sprung, and lever mecha- .l nism carried by one arm and having toothed' engagement with the other arm to hold said j arms in set position holding said trap sprung. In combination with a receptacle ot' the classI described. a false wall. a. concealedA trap: a tripping mechanism releasable b v the movement of said wall. spi-ino* pressed. pivxsprnnega lever carried by one arm rin posi-A tion to interlock with the other arm, and a saft-ty lever engaging with saidlocking arm.' In testimony whereof we aiix our signatures in presence of two' witnesses.
