To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, ABRAHAM SATZMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of thecity of New York, borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Coal-Chute Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to covers for manholes, as for instance a cover for a coal chute, and has, for an object the provision of an improved construction which embodies as its essential feature safety resulting from a locking mechanism and associated parts for continually holding the cover near the chute and for locking the cover when closed.

Another object in View is to provide a cover hinged to a casing and a spring pressed so that when it is unlocked it will automatically move to a partially opened position.

A further object more specifically is the provision of a cover with a lock for holding the same positively closed, and means for opening the cover slightly when the lock has been moved to an unlocked position whereby the cover may be easily opened when desired and is positively held closed after having been first moved to a closed position. 1

positively hold the cover 6 closed a bolt 12 is provided which normally underlies the flange 5, said bolt being urged by spring 13 to this position. The bolt 12 is slidingly fitted into posts 14: and 15 secured to the plate 16, said plate being in turn rigidly secured to the cover 6 by screw or in any desired manner. A pin 17 extends throug the bolt 12 and is provided with an eye 18 for receiving the end of a chain or cable 19. Spring 13 presses against the post 1 1 and against the pin 17 in order to hold the parts normally as shown in Fig. 1. When the chain 19 is pulled bolt 12 will be moved from beneath the flange 5 against the action of spring 13. -This will release cover 6 so that the same will rise to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 under the action' of springs 20 and 21. These springs are rigidly secured to the flange 5 and extend through notches or recesses 22 and 23. It will, of course, be understood that the person operating the chain will be in the coal pit or at some convenient place within the house or cellar. However, after the bolt 12 has been released and the parts moved to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 any one on the pavement may raise the cover 6 to a full open position in order that the coal or other articles may be dumped into the chute 2. It will be noted that the cover 6 is hinged to the section 7 of frame 3, this will prevent any accidental loss of the cover so that when the coal has been properly stowed away the bolt 12 will snap into its locked position as shown in Fig. 1. Preferably the ends of pintle 10 are riveted or upset so as to prevent the removal of the cover.

In Fig. 3a modified structure is disclosed in which a spring 24 is secured at 25 to the cover 6 so that the free end 26 of the spring may press against the casing. or frame 3 in the corner 27. This arrangement will allow the cover to raise automatically when released and also permit the cover to be opened wide manuallv.

In Fig. 4 a modified form of catch is shown in which the bolt 28 is pivotally mounted at 29 so as to be swung back and forth by the chains 30 and 31 connected to gagement with the flange 5 whereupon the cover 6 may be automatically moved up-.

1. A safety coal chute cover comprising an annular casing having an annular flange offset from thetop, said flange havinga square section provlded wlth a pair of upstanding ears acting as knuckles of a hinge,

a lid'provided with an opposite extension I acting a a knuckle of a hinge, a-pintle extending through all of said knuckles for pivotally connecting said 'lid with said flange, a spring actingon said lid for autom'atlcally raising the same, and a catch for locking said lid closed.

2. A safety coal chute comprising an an-- nular caslng formed wlth an inwardly eX- tending annulanfiangeofi'set from the top andwith a pair of hinge knuckles, said annular casing having substantially oppositely positioned cut away portions therein,

each of said spring members being secured to the flange and projecting'therethrough so as to press continually against thelid when closed in order to open the lid when saidlock is unlocked.
