Be it known that I, l-laumx 1'. Wanmu'n,
of Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Electric Handdlamps: and I do hereby declare the following to he a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will am able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
a It is well known'that in the use of portable electric hand lamps the connecting cords are subjected to the greatest wear, and have to be frequently replaced.
The primary object of my invention is to provide means for protecting the connecting cord and plug when the amp is not in use; and a further object is to accomplish this end by means which will be inexpensive and not disfigure the appearance of the lam Tlie invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the lamp showing the parts in position when the lamp is not in use, portions being broken away. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the lamp with the cord and connecting plug removed and ready for use. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation with the cord inclosing cover removed. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the plug fitted in sockets and the cord partly unwound. Fig. 5is a view of the cover detached. Figs. 6 and 7 show slight modifications, and likewise Figs. 8 and 9. Fig. 10 is a section on line 1010, Fig. 1. Fig. 11 is a horizontal sectional view of the plug. transverse sectional view thereof, and Fig. 13 an end view. 5 is the connectingeord which is preferably covered with a coiled protector 6 at its point of entrance into casing 3 in a manner wellknown in the art, and for the urpose of accommodating this protector w en the lam is not in use, I form in the lamp casing 3 a ongitudinally extended chamber 7 open atits outer side and in which the protector ma be readily located with its outer portion wit iin the curvature of the casin This enables the lamp handle, which is s own in the form of an inclosing cover 8 to be secured in place to retain the rotector within the chamber. This cover is preferably of cylindrical formation and closed at its outer end, its inner end being interiorly threaded to engage thread 4 of the lamp casing. It will be observed that the casing extends only part of the' way over protector 6, but sufficiently far to retain it within the chamber.

This support is shown as extending from a base 12 of the lamp, and in the form of a narrow rod, but it may be differently formed if de-' sired. It extends longitudinally of the axis of the lamp casing within the hollow handle or cover thereof. The cord may be wound around the support, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and partly outlined in Figs. 1 and 6. The base 12 has a peripheral cut out 13 through which the cord may pass, such cut out being coincident with the lower end of chamber 7.
.15 designates the plug to which the free end of cord 5 is connected. This plug is of any suitable insulating material, but is preferably of semi-circular formation, and is equipped with two terminal lugs 16 of known construction. The plug is interiorly hollowed out or formed withchambers to allow cord 5 to be connected to the two terminal lugs, and it is also provided, at its periphery, with a cut-out 16 which extends out through one of the flat sides of the plug so as to enable the cord to be carried at right angles to the terminal lugs. Forthe purpose of supporting the plug within the lamp, or, more properly spea ing, connecting it to the lamp when not in use, I provide two sockets 20 to accommodate terminal lugs 16 of the ,plug. In Figs. 1, 3 and 4 I have shown these sockets 20 as projecting from a web plate 21 carried by a disk 22 at the outer end of. the cord supporting rod,l0,
- and I have shown such disk 22 as having a shown in Fig. 7, it may be dispensed with,
in which event theplug support will depend directly from the lamp base and the outer disk 24 thereof will be provided with two peripheralcut-outs to accommodate the connecting cord which latter will be bundled within and inclosed by the cylindrical handle or cover 8.
Although I prefer to give the lamp casing and handle a cylindrical formation they may be of substantially elliptical shape as shownin Figs. 8, 9 and 16, and likewise, instead of attaching the handle or cover th the lamp casing by a screw thread the open end of the handle or. cover may be split and held in place by tension, as shown in Fig. 8. a The form of the cord support 10 in Fig. 16 is different from that which I preferably employ, but it is manifest that any preferred formation may be adopted.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent from the aforegoing. It will be seen that when the lamp is not in use the cord may be wound on its support-and inclosed bythe hollow handle which forms the cover, or it may be bundled into the latter as indicated in Fig. 7. The plug is held out of the way by being mounted on its support, at right angles to the axis of the lamp casing, at either the outer or inner end of the cord support, and when the lamp is not in use the cord protector 6 is held by the handle or cover within its retaining chamber. Likewise, when the lamp is in use, the cover may be restored to the lamp casing so as to serve as a handle, and inasmuch as this handle or cover does not extend wholly over the protector chamber 7 such protector may project outwardly from the lamp without interference from the handle or cover. When the latter is removed the cord may be readily unwound by revolvin the lamp in the hand of the operator an the terminal lugs inserted in suitable sockets, and when the use of the lampvis at an end and the cord wound on its support or placed within the casing the plug will be held out of the way by its support. By giving to the pluga semi-circular formation itallows the handle or cover to be placed in or removed from position. without interference therefrom.
Changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A portable electric lamp comprising a .lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, a plug connected by said cord to the lamp, and a hollow handle of substantially the same formation in cr ss section as the lamp casing to which .it is detachably secured for inclosing the cord and plug" when the latter are not in use.
' 2. A portable electric lamp comprising a lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto,a plug connected by said cord to the lamp, a support for said plug carried by the lamp casing and located at right angles to the axis thereof, and a hollow handle of subthe lamp casing and arranged longitudi-.
nally of the axis thereof, and a hollow handle detachably secured to the lamp cas, ing for inclosing the cord in its support.
, 5. A portable electric lamp comprisinga lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, .a. support for said cord carried by the lamp'casing and arranged longitudinally of the axis thereof, a plug connected by said cord to the lamp, asupport for said plug also carried by the lamp casing ranged at right angles to the 3X18 thereof, and a'hollow handle detachably secured to the lamp casing for inclosing the cord, the plug and the support therefor when the lamp is not in use.
6. A portable electric lamp comprising a lamp casing, having a longitudinally ex" tending chamber open at its outer side, a connecting cord designed to fit within said chamber, a base for said lamp having a peripheral cut out to accommodate said cord, and an inclosin cover for projecting in and ar l stantially the same formation in cross sec- I part over said 0 amber, and for inclosing cover for projecting in part over said chamber and for inclosing said cord when the lamp is not in use.
8. The combination with the lamp casing having in one side a longitudinally-extended chamber open at its outer side, a base at the end of said casing having a peripheral cut out coincident with said chamber, a connecting cord extending through said casing and designed to fit within said chamber, a cover detaehably secured to said lamp casing and designed to extend partly over said chamber for retaining the cord therein when the lamp is not in use, and means for detachably securing said cover.
9. A portable electric lamp comprising a lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, a plug connected by said cord to the lamp, said plug having terminal lugs pro jectin'g therefrom, and a support for the plug carried by the lamp casing and arranged at right angles to the axis of the latter, said support comprising a fixed plate having sockets to accommodate said terminal lugs when the lamp is notin use, and a hollow handle for the lamp for concealing said plug and cord.
10. A portable electric lamp comprising a cylindrical lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, a plug having terminal lugs to which said cord is connected, said plug being of semi-circular formation, a support for the terminal lugs carried by the lamp, the periphery of the plug when held by said support being within the periphery of the lamp casing, and a cylindrical cover detachably secured to the lamp casing for inclosing the cord and plug when the lamp is not in use.
11. A portable electric lamp comprising a cylindrical lamp casing, a connecting cord ,secured thereto, a plug having terminal lugs to which said cord is connected, said plug being of semi-circular formation and having a peripheral cut out for the passage of the cord at right angles to the terminal lugs, a support for the latter carried by the lamp,
and a cylindrical cover detachably secured to the lamp casing for concealing the plug and cord when the lamp is not in use.
12. A portable electric lamp comprising a cylindrical lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, a cord support havlng a disk-like portion, a plug secured to said cord having a semi-circular formation conforming to said disk, a support for said plug adjacent the said disk, and a cylindrical cover detachably secured to the lamp casing for inclosing the cord and plug.
13. A portable electric lamp comprising a cylindricallamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, a plug having terminal lugs to which said cord is connected, said plug being of semi-circular formation and having openings through its curved portion for the passage of the cord and also having a pcripheral cut-out through which the cord may pass at right angles to the terminal lugs, a support for the plug, and a cylindrical cover detachably secured to the lamp casing for inclosing the cord and the plug when the lamp is not in use.
14. A portable electric lamp comprising a cylindrical lamp casing, a connecting cord secured thereto, acord support having a disk-like portion formed with a peripheral cut-out, a plug secured to said cord having a semi-circular formation for conforming to said disk, a support for said plug adjacent; to said disk, said cord being designed to pass through said cut-out when the plug is in said support, and a cylindrlcal cover detachably secured to the lamp casing.
