D. W. GRAZIER.
ELECTRIC LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED car. 25. um.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
Application filed. October 25, 1917. Serial No. 198,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Donn W. GRAZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, Camb-ria county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Lamps, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of a lamp embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof,
My invention has relation to electric lamps, and more particularly to that class of lamps commonly known as trouble lamps which are used around shops, automobiles, etc.
Lamps of this character heretofore in use, with which I am familiar, consist merely of an ordinary incandescent light bulb attached to a flexible cord containing the current supply wires, and which is carried around the shop, or the place where it is to be used. When not in use these lamps are generally thrown down wherever they happen to be with the cord attached thereto. The cord is usually underfoot and in the way; it frequently becomes tangled and not readily accessible and the lamps are easily broken or destroyed.
My invention is designed to provide a lamp of this character which, when not in use, will be entirely self contained, the handle of the lamp forming a container therefor and for the supply wires or cord, and the entire lamp capable of being readily carried in the pocket or in the toolkit.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown a convenient and preferred form of my invention, the numeral 2 designates a container, preferably of sheet metal, and of cylindrical form, although it may be of any desired form. This container is open at one end, and at the opposite end has a removable cover 3. Seated within the open end portion of the container is a lamp support 4 which may be of any desired form.
This container, in the form shown, is insert ed within the casing at the open end thereof and is pushed through to the opposite end portlon where it is heldin place by the beaded edge 5 and the inset beads or flanges 6. The container is provided with a socket member 7 with which an incandescent light bulb 8 can be readily engaged in a manner to make proper electric connection therewith. The socket member 7 is provided with terminal screws 9 for the insulated supply wires 10, the latter being formed into a cord or cable, having a. plug 11 at the free end which can be plugged into a source of current supply. The cover 3 is preferably provided with a loop or eye 12 on its inner side through which the supply wire cord is loosely threaded. 13 designates a protector which may be conveniently formed of spring wire and which is seated within the front end of the casing, being sprung into engagement with the bead 5.
When not in use the supply wire cord or cable and its plug are within the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, the lamp being thus selfcontained, and capable of being readily carried in the pocket or in a tool-chest. When it is desired to use the lamp the cover 3 is removed and the plug 11 engaged with any usual socket having connection with a source of current supply. While the lamp is in use, the cover remains on the cord, and is thus prevented from becoming lost.
My invention provides an extremely simple and convenient lamp of the character described and iscapable of being manufactured and sold at a low cost. I do not limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of the parts which I have herein shown and described since this may be widely varied within the spirit and scope of the appended claim, thus, the frame 0 the casing may be widely varied; it may be made of any suitable material; .the shape of the container 4 may be changed, etc.
I claim:
An electric lamp of the character described, comprising a portable casing having an electric lamp w thin one end portion with the casing extending backwardly from the lamp to form a handle therefor and also a use, the cover remains attached to the lamp container, said extension being normally through said Wires, substantially as declosed at its rear end by a removable cap, scribed. 10'
and flexible supply wires'for the lamp adapt- 1 In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set ed to be received Within the said extension, my hand. I V
said cover being engaged by the said Wires 7 whereby When removed and the lamp is in DORE W. GRAZIER.
