AUTO TROUBLE-LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. Hon- LOWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonopah, in the county of Nye and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Auto Trouble- Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a portable electric light and cord holder primarilv designed for use by motorists as a substitute for the light which is generally carried in the tool chest on the machine. When the use of such lights are desired, it frequently proves difficult to find a suitable support for the same, with a result that it is often impossible to dispose the light to the convenience and best advantage of the user. or within reach of the latter.
It is with a view of eliminating these objections, that I contemplate the provision of a casing in which the electric light is arranged, constituting a support for the latter, which permits of use of the light at most any convenient location about the machine; the invention further embodying a drum mounted upon a support, and about which the electric cord can be wound or unwound as the occasion requires.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the casing with a depression defining a pocket for the reception of the plug carried on one end of the electric cord, and further contemplates the use of a foldable handle for the drum which can be folded close to the casing in an out of the way position, when use of the device in its entirety is not desired.
Other objects of importance will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification like numerals of reference ,indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the invention. showing the folded portion of the handle.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken therethrough showing the active position of the handle.

Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the drum.
The device forming the subject matter of my invention consists of a casing 10 which may be constructed from any suitable material and design. but preferably of metal in rectangular formation and cross section.
Consequently. the casing embodies a bottom 11. top 12, front and rear walls 13 and 14 respectively, and side walls 15. \Vhile the casing may be of any suitable size, it is preferably designed to fit in the tool box on the machine. The front wall 13 is stamped to provide any large central opening 1(i and a conical shaped portion 17 which projects rearwardly from the front wall and is fully disposed within the casing. An electric bulb 18 is disposed within the conical shaped portion 17, the latter being utilized as a reflector, while the enlarged opening 16 in the front wall of the casing is covered by a glass cover 19.
' Disposed within the casing is a drum designed in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4. As shown this drum embodies a conical shaped portion'2O for the reception of the reflector 17, whereby the latter constitutes a bearing for the drum. Located within an opening in the apex of the conical shaped portion 20 of the drum, is one extremity of a shaft 21, which forms an axis for the drum and projects through an opening in the rear wall of the casing in which it is journaled. The innermost extremity of the shaft also projects through an opening of the conical shaped member of the reflector l7, and has associated therewith a socket 22 of usual construction to accommodate the electric bulb 18. The heads 23 of the drum are as shown mounted upon the large end of the conical shaped portion 20 and on the shaft 21 adjacent the rear wall 14 of the casing. The electric cord 24 has one end connected with the socket 22 and is also connected with the shaft 21 in any suitable manner at a. point approximately midway between the ends thereof. The cord of course may be of any suitable length, it being adapted to be wound upon and unwound from the drum, in other Words about the shaft 21. For the purpose of rotating the drum 1 provide the shaft 21 with an extension 25, which is disposed exteriorly of the casing and has hingedly connected therewith a handle 27 which when in active position is disposed in a right angle with respect to the extension 25. Manifestly the handle is capable of being folded against the extension 25 when its use is not desired, and with a view of maintaining the handle in a folded position I provide the extension 25- with a socket 27 to receive and accommodate a knob 28 carried by the handle adjacent the extremity thereof. The extension 25 may be threaded or otherwise detachably secured to the adjacent extremity of the shaft 21 to permit of the separation therefrom when it, is desired to remove the drum in its entirety from the casing and for this purpose the rearwall 14 of the casing is also separate. The electric cord 24 projects through an opening in the top wall 12 of the casing, and fitted within this opening is a fiber washer 29 to minimize wear of the cord as it is going through the opening. The outer extremity of the cord has associated therewith a plug 30 of usual construction adapted to be fitted within a light socket, and to definitely locate this plug when use of the device is not desired, I provide the top Wall 12 with a depression 31 in which the plug is fitted. With the handle 27 in folded position, and the plug fitted within the pocket 31 a very compact construction and arrangement of parts is provided in a device of the class in question, so that the device may be conveniently located in the tool box on the machine. Again, when the use of the device is desired it is only necessary to unwind the cord from the shaft 21 of the drum sufliciently to permit of the casing 10 being located in the most convenient and advantageous position for use. As above stated the casing constitutes a support for the lamp and it can rest upon the ground or be located upon most any part of the machine, thus afiording the operator the use of both hands while the repair work is being done.
While it will be seen that from the description that the nature and the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that What is herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, to which I do not limit myself, inasmuch as certain changes may be resorted to when desired as falls within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is In a device of the class described, a casing, one wall of the casing being struck inwardly to provide a conical shaped portion providing a reflector, a drum rotatab-ly mounted within the casing and including a conical shaped portion receiving said reflector whereby the latter constitutes a bearing for the drum, said drum also including a shaft, journaled in the opposed wall of the casing, an electric bulb carried by the shaft and disposed within the reflector, an electric cord connected with the bulb, and shaft and adapted to be wound about and unwound from the latter, and means for rotating said drum.
