Be it known that I, WILLIAM ELMER, J r.,
a citizen of the United States of America,l
residing in the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Balancing Construction, of which the following is a new and exact description, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My present invention relates to window constructions, and particularly to window constructions for factory and other large buildings in which the window openings are so elongated in a vertical direction as to make it desirable to use more than a single pair of sashes for each window opening.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective window construction of the character specified, having provisions for counterbalancing each sash by another sash in the same frame, and for moving all of the sashes for a single window opening to a common level for cleaning or the like when necessary.
In carrying out my invention, I provide separate parallel guideways in each frame for the separate sashes which are arranged in a plurality of pairs, and counterbalance each sash by another sash through connections so arranged that each of the sashes may be brought to the common cleaning or repair level.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claim annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of my invention, however, and the advantages possessed by it, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described one of the forms in which my invention may be embodied.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a side of a building showing the frame for one window opening and a portion of an adjacent opening. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5 but with the top sash down from its closed position, and, Fig. 5 is a view taken similarly to Fig. 2, showing a portion only of Specification of Letters Patent.

In the construction shown in the drawings, the window frame for each window opening is formed by vertical frame members A and top frame members B and B', and bottom frame members C; all of said frames are preferably formed of metal. The frame members A, shown best in Fig. 4, are in the form of I beams. Guideways for four sashes, E', E2, E3 and E, are formed by the flanges A of the side members A and spacing ribs F, preferably of metal, secured to the web of the I beam A by bolts F2. As shown in Fig. 4, where window openings are side by side, the bolts F2 may pass through the web and secure in place not only the ribs F for one set of sashes but also the ribs F for the adjacent set.
The sashes E, E2, E, and E", which may be of the usual construction, are connected 'together in pairs by flexible cords or chains G and G fastened to screws H secured to the sashes. The upper and lower sashes E and E being connected by the chains Gr, and the intermediate sashes E2 and E3 by the chains G. Each chain G passes over a pair of guides or pulleys Gr3 located at the upper end of the window opening one adjacent each flange A of the I beam A. Similarly, the cord G passes over a guide or pulley G4 having its center located above the middle rib F. The pintles G5 for the guide rolls are journaled in plates G secured to the web of the beams A by bolts G7 and suitable spacers.
By this arrangement it will be observed that each of the sashes may be moved to the desired cleaning or repair level; for instance, under ordinary circumstances to the level occupied in Fig. l by the sash E4. As the window frames are formed of metal they are very durable and are not liable to warp out of shape.
Certain novel features in the construction and arrangement of the window frame disclosed but not claimed herein are claimed in my copendinfr application, Serial No. 492,208, filed April 26, 1909, as a division of this case.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A window frame having a plurality of pairs of guideways for sashes, a sash in each guideway, the sashes when in the closed position being arranged in a series at suecessive levels, flexible counterbalaneing oonnections coupling the sashes in pairs, each sash of each pair so coupled occupying the same position with respect to one end of said series that the other sash of the pair occupies with respect to the other end of the series, the flexible eounterbalancing connection between each pair of sashes coupled together being independent of the flexible counterbalancing connection to any other sash, and guides located above the upper end of said series over which all of said counterbalaneing connections pass, whereby each sash is counterbalaneed by another sash, and each of the sashes may be brought to a common level.
