COUNTERBALANCING SASHES FOR VARIOUS METAL AND OTHER CASEMENTS.

Be it known that GEORGE W. LANCASTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, has invented new and useful Counterbalancing Sashes for Various Metal and Other Casements, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its purpose the provision of a plurality of counterbalancing sashes, either of metal or otherwise, preferably the former, with means connected to an upper sash and being shiftable into and out of engagement with the 115V lower sash and into and out of engagement with counterbalancing.members, so that the uppermost and lowermost sashes may be counterbalanced, or the uppermost sash adjusted independently, while the two intermediate sashes are counterbalanced by each other.
Another purpose is to improve the construction and arrangement of sashes and counterbalancing means therefor, set forth, illustrated and claimed in the copending application filed March 19, 1921, Serial No. 453,592.
In said copending application a member is shifted from the lowermost sash to a counterbalancing member or weight and vice versa,`but in this construction the shiftable means is `grasped at the center, and it has been found that in moving the parts in the guides of the easement, frictional binding may more or less occur. y
l'.lherefore'the present invention aims to avoid this possibility, by providing a shifting bar, shiftable from engagement with the lowermost sash, into engagement with the counterbalancing members or weights and vice versa, the bar being so arranged that it can be grasped by the operator at any point throughout its length.
Still another purpose, is the provision of channel guides for the sashes, and channel guides for uney counterbalancing weights, and channel guides for the operating transverse bar, the guides for the Operating transverse bar are cut away at their lower portions, to permit the transverse bar to be shifted from the counterbalancing weights to engagement with the lowermost sash and vice versa, in
order to adjust the uppermost and lowermost sashes, or the uppermost sash independently, for the purpose of ventilation.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referringto the drawings, 1 designates a window Casement, constructed of any suitable material preferably sheet metal. This easement is provided with a plurality of guides 2, 3, 4, and 5, for the uppermost and lowermost sashes 6 and 7 and the intermediate sashes 8 and 9. The intermediate sashes are operatively connected by the cord or cable 10, passing over the pulley 11, for counterbalancng them. The upper part of the Casement has mounted therein pulleys 12, whichare engaged by the cord or cable 13, one end of which is connected at 14 to the uppermost sash 6.
The casement is provided with additional guides 15 land 16 arranged perpendicularly at the sides of the casement. The easement is also provided with guides 17, in which 'counterbalancing members or weights 18 are which has enlargements 22 at its opposite 4ends. The enlargements may be any suit- -pprojec-tions or pins 2l, which are axially aligned with the projections `or pins 25, which'are carried by the weights or counterbalancing members 18. mmediately adjacent the reduced extensions 23, the enlarge ',ments 22 of the operating bar are provided withy lopenings 26, which may receive the projections 2a or the projections 25. It will be noted that when the operating bar 21 1sl shifted toward the lowcrmost sash or toward the weights or counter-balancingmemto engage the guides 15 or the guides 1G,`

In other words when the operating bar is connected to the lowermost sash and said sash is raised, the uppermost When the operating bar is shifted toward the counterbalancing members or weights 18, the projections or pins 25 will enter the openings 26, inwhich case the weights or r counterbalancine members 1S will move with the operating bar, and since the bar is conneet-ed to theuppermost sash ot the cords 13, then-the uppermost sash may be lowered independently. It will be noted that the handy grasping portion 2S of the operating member or bar is olf'setfrom the enlargements,lso as to permit the bar lto lbe easily grasped by the operator.

In a window structure, a easement having` 'two opposite perpendicular sets of guides including dividing' walls, the lower ends of said walls being eut away to cause passages to be formed Connect-ing the corresponding,` ends of said guides, the easement having additional guides, counterbalancing devices movable in said additional guides and provided with a set of projections, upper and lowermost sashes mounted for vertical movement in the easement, the lowermost sash having a set of projections, an operatingbar movable through said passages for operating in either set of the first mentioned guides and havingy openings at its ends to receive the projections of either set thereof, whereby the operating bar may move with the counterbalancing devices or with the lowermost sash, and means operatively connecting said bar and the uppermost sash, said operating' bar having' an offset hand Vgrasping portion, whereby the operator may easily move the same, and means ior locking the lowermost sash when lowered, adapted to prevent'openmg the lowermost sash when `the uppermost sash is opened by operating the bar.
