SASH-FRAME AND SASH- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,865, dated August 30, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn Gr. RosEBooM, a citizen of the United States,residing at Colum-. bus, in the countyof Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to sash-frames and sashes; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous metallic sash-frame and sliding sashes hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating a sash-frame and sashes constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one sash embodying my invention removed. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section taken in the plane indicated by line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which A is the sill of a sash-frame, which is provided with vertical sockets and a rib Z, and B is the head-piece of the frame, which is provided on its under side with a rib 0, similar to the rib Z) of the sill. head-piece may be of wood, metal, or other material suitable to the purposes of my invention without involving a departure from the scope thereof.

These side stiles in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention respectively comprise metallic plates (Z, extending between and fixed with respect to the sill A and headpiece B and having inturned flanges e, a metallic brace f, interposed between and connected to the upper portions of the plates (Z, and metallic guides g g. The said guides g g are provided at their lower ends with pins Znwhich rest in the sockets (Z of the sill, as shown, and are also provided with beads 2". The said sill and and on its other vertical edge with a straight inturned flange k, while the guide g is provided on both of its vertical edges with hookshaped flanges Z. In virtue of the guides being flanged as stated it will be observed that the guide g is adapted to interlock with the flange e of one plate (Z and the guide g is adapted to interlock with the flange e of the other plate (Z and also with the guide g; also, that the flanges of the guides are adapted to rest against the brace f, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the said brace is enabled to prevent casual disconnection of the guides from each other and from the plates (Z. It will be noticed, however, that when the guides g g are raised so as to remove their pins 7L from the sockets (Z said guides may be moved laterally out of engagement with each other and the plates (Z. From this it follows that the guides maybe as readily placed and fixed with respect to the sill A and the plates (Z. At their upper ends the guides g g bear sheaves at, over which pass cables n, which are designed to be connected at oneend with the sliding sashes presently described and are provided on their opposite ends with counterbalanceweights p. These latter are designed to move vertically in the spaces between the plates (Z of the side stiles and back of the guides g g of said stiles.
D is the lower sash, of metal, and E the upper sash, also of metal. The said sashes are provided in their outer sides with vertical grooves q to receive the beads of the guides g g and are also provided in said grooves with antifriction-rollers 7, which are designed to bear against the beads and reduce to a minimum the noise incident to movements of the sashes. The lower sash D is also provided in its lower end with a groove 8 to receive the rib b on the sill A, while the upper sash E is provided in its upper end with a groove t, designed to receive the rib 0 of the head-piece B. From this it follows that when the sashes are closed weather will be effectually prevented from passing between the. lower sash and the sill or between the upper sash and the head-piece. In the upper bars of the sashes D and E are formed openings a, and in the inner sides of the side bars of the sashes and communicating with the said openings uare grooves or, Fig. 4. In virtue of this construction it will be observed that the glasses in may be simply lowered into the sashes, and when so placed there is no liability of the glasses casually falling out of the sashes. \Vhen itis desired to provide either of the sashes with more than one light, a bar :1 Fig. 4, is interposed between the panes of glass.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that the parts of my novel sash-frame and sashes are adapted to be quickly and easily assembled and as readily disconnected when a desired; also, that the frame and sashes are strong and durable and are calculated to contribute materially to the fireproof qualities of adwelling or other building. It will further be appreciated that by virtue of the sashes having the antifriction-rollers r hearing against the beads of the guides g g move ment of the sashes is attended with little or no noise, which is obviously an important advantage.
1 have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. 1 do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A sash-frame comprising a sill having vertical sockets in its upper side, a head-piece, and metallic side stiles respectively made up of plates extending between and fixed to the sill and the head-piece,guides interlocked with each other and the said plates, and having pins at their lower ends let into the sockets of the sill, and a brace extending between the upperportions of the plates,back of the guides, and adjacent to said guides.
2. In a sash-frame, the combination of a sill having vertical sockets in its upper side, a head-piece, and metallic side stiles respectively comprising plates arranged a suitable distance apart and extending between and fixed to the sill and the head pieee and having inturned flanges eon their exposed vertical edges, upright guides remov-abl y arranged between the flanges of the plates and having flanges whereby they are interlocked with each other and the plates, and also having pins at their lower ends let into the sockets of the sill, and a braceinterposed between the plates at the upper portions thereof and back of and adjacent to the flanges of the guides.
3. In asash-frame, the combination of asill, a head-piece, metallic side stiles respectively comprising plates arranged a suitable distance apart and extending between and fixed with respect to the silland the head-piece, and upright guides removably arranged between the said plates and interlocked with each other and the plates; said guides being adapted to be moved both vertically and laterally, coacting means in the sill and on the guides for holding the said guides against lateral movement, and means on the plates for assisting in holding the guides against lateral movement.
