Be it known that I, ISAAC P. CANFIELD, of Paw Paw, in the county of Morgan and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in package ties, the object being to provide a simple device capable of withstanding rough usage and handling; which can be readily and quickly applied to a package, and when so applied will securely hold the cord against accidental displacement.
With these and other oojects in view my invention consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing my improved tie applied to a bundle. Fig. 2 is a view of the tie detached. Fig. 3 is a view in section thereof. Fig. l is a view of the underside of the clamping head and F 5 is a view in section of a modified construction.
1 represents my improved fasten-er or tie, made from a rectangulaplate of spring metal bent upon itself into t -shape, and 2 is a pin or shank passing through holes 3 in the two members l of the ti-shaped tie, and provided at each end with a clamping head l, the inner faces of which are grooved or roughened so as to more securely grip and hold the cord when the latter is forced thereunder. These heads 4r are preferably suiiiciently close together to hold the two men bers 1 of the tie under tension, so that one member 1 must he forced toward theother member, by the act of forcing the cord under one head.
The construction shown in Figs. 1 to I inclusive can be used either side up. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the pin 2 is secured to one member 1 of the tie, passes through a hole in the other member and is provided at its free end with a clamping head 4: identical in all respects with the heads shown in the other form, and is designed for use with the head 4- at the top.
The binding cord or string 5 is secured at one end to the closed end of the fastener or tie.

In applying the device to a bundle the tie or fastener 1 is placed about centrally on the top of the bundle, and the string 5, carried over the bundle in the direction of the length of the tie to one end; then down and under the bundle and up over the opposite end and back to the tie. The binding cord or string is then forced under the clamping head, after which it is passed one or more times around the bundle at right angles to the length of the tie 1, and its end secured by forcing it under the clamping head 4. To release the cord it is simply necessary to grasp the free end and forcibly withdraw it from under the head, or compress the members so as to release the cord from the head.
IVhile this tie is adapted for bundles of any and all kinds, it is particularly adapted, owing to the ease and facility with which the cord may be secured and released, for tying up bundles of mail, and may be reused any number of times.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claim and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction shown and described, but

A package tie comprising two fiat spring divergent members united at one end, said members having alined holes, and a pin passing through said holes and provided at its ends with flattened heads disposed with their inner faces at an angle to the outer faces of the adjacent spring members, said pin freely movable in the alined holes and each of said heads adapted to cooperate with the adjacent spring members to form a cord clamp, whereby the device can be used either side up on a package.
