FRANK T. HENRY, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
BUNDLE OR PACKAGE TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed October 12, 1917. Serial No. 196,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK T. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Michigan City, in the county of Laporte, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Bundle or Package Tie; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved bundle or package tie, for a package of letters, papers, or any kind of bundle or package and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, efiicient and durable bundle or package tying device consisting of few parts, and which may be manufactured for a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bundle or package tying device consisting of a wrapping or tying cord and a fastener connected to one end of the cord, and having means to be engaged by the other end of the cord turned into a loop.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved fastener consisting of a body having a slot or a kerf in one end, one of the opposing jaws of which having several yieldable fingers, in order to insure a firm binding on the cord, which may vary in thickness at different points.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing a bundle or a package of letters or the like, illustrating the improved bundle or package tying device applied.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the fastener.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a fastener showing a modified form of construction.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4, showing the tying cord as applied.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the fastener, which may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably wood or fiber, and which may be any suitable shape or configuration. One end of the body is provided with an aperture or opening 2, through which one end of a tying cord 3 is passed, and the extremity of said end is knotted at 4 to-the body of the cord, thereby securely connecting the cord to the fastener. One face of the body of the fastener substantially midway its end is provided with a transverse kerf or groove 5, there being an overhanging tongue or portion 6. In tying a bundle or package of any kind, the body of the fastener is disposed adjacent one face of the bundle, the cord 3 is passed about thebundle, and its other end portion is forced or wedged into the kerf or groove 5, the tongue or overhanging portion 6 acting to clamp down on the cord, to fasten the same securely in place. The end portion of the body opposite the end having the aperture 2 is provided with a slot or kerf 7, which is cut in parallelism with the opposite faces of the body, and its crotch 9 is in close position to the crotch of the groove or kerf 5, there being but a slight neck or connection 10 between the two crotches. The j aws 11 and 12, it is to be noted, are yieldable. The portion of the cord beyond that portion which engages the groove or kerf 5, is forced between the two jaws 11 and 12, until it ongages the crotch 9 of the slot or curve 7. In this case a portion of the cord engages one end of the neck or connecting portion between the two crotches, and consequently there are three decided turns or bends 13, 14; and 15 formed in the cord, which together with the cord frictionally binding or wet ging in the kerfs 5 and 7 will securely hold one end of the cord to the fastener, and consequently hold the bundle securely tied. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 it is to be observed that the jaw 11 of the body of the fastener is rovided with a pair of parallel slots or zerfs 16, which are at right angles to the kerf or slot 7 thereby forming a plurality of spring tongues 17. It has been found that a piece of cord varies in thickness or diameter at different points throughout its length, and where a piece of cord varying in thickness engages the groove or kerf 7, the entire transverse faces of the jaws 11 and 12 will not frictionally engage the entire portion of the cord which is in the slot or kerf, provided the jaws 11 and 12 are as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. However, where one of the jaws comprises one or more spring tongues, said tongues Will engage the cord at several different places, as shown in Fig. 6, thereby more securely connecting the cord to the body of the fastener.
; -.Th e inventionhavingbeen set forth What is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a bundle or pa'cl'zag'e tying device, a fastener comprising a body having an open ing in one end in Wl' i'ch one end of a cord is adapted to be fasteiied, said body adjacent the opposite end having a pair of kerfs and a '11'ariowneck adjoining the crotehes of "said l rer fis, whereby the opposite end portion of thecor'd' may engage about the neck and in the er'otches of the kerf's, tl'iereby making th'ree turns or bends in the 'cord, said body adJa'ee'nt one of the kerfs l'i'avin'g a pair of opposing j'a'ws, one of said jaivs having plurality of yieldable tongues, whereby a portion of a cord of different thicknesses at different points may be securely clamped.
'2. In a bundle or package tying device, 'a fastener comprising a body having an opening in one endi'n which, one end of a cord is adapted to be fastened, said body substantially midway its ends having a transversely disposed kerf extending from one face of the body angularly through the thickness thereof and toward the other end of the body said other end of the body having a .tra'iusversely disposed kerf parallel with the opposite faces of the body and parallel with the transverse position of the first kerf, said body adjacent the crotches of both kerfs having a narrow neck adjoining the crotches, whereby the opposite end portion of the 60rd may Wrap on'ce thereabout, said otli'er end of the body adjacent the second 'l'rerf having a pair'of opposing jaws, one of which being provided With a plurality of yi'eldable tongues, wh reby a portion of the cord of different thicknesses at different points may be clamped betiveen said jaws securely.
