Description

G HOITJ [GAS BURNER. APPLIUA'TIUN num 11111.21, 1910.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
CHARLES HOFF, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF IO FREDERICK HOFMANN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
ens-BURNER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HOFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, I-Iamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, attention being called to the accompanying drawing, and the reference. characters marked thereon, which forms also a partof this application.
This invention relates to a gas-burner intended prineipally for heatingpurposes and consists of the particular construction hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which :-u
Figure 1, is a central vertical cross-section of the burner and of auxiliary devices used in connection therewith. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the same, certain auxiliary devices being removed. Fig. 3, is a top-view of the upper end of the burner-pipe.
In the drawing, A indicates a pipe through which the gas enters the burner and which forms also the attaching stem of the burner to a feed-pipe, it being provided for suchpurpose with a socket B.
C is a gas-expansion chamber provided around the upper part of the burner-pipe, and supported thereon. This chamber is formed by two shells, an upper inverted one 5, substantially cone-shaped, and a lower one 6, substantially semi-globular, both shells being flanged at their circumferential edges and connected to each other by a seam 7. A horizontal annular row of orilices c is provided in the lower shell 6. The gas issues at the upper, open end of pipe A,
. the edge of the pipe-wall being notched as shown at a to facilitate free egress of the gas. From here the gas enters chamber C and discharges through orifices c, outside of which ignition and combustion take place. Otherwise the chamber is completely closed. Chamber C, being surrounded by heat and flame, becomes intensely hot whereby the gas within becomes preheated and is caused to expand.
D is a draft chimney, preferably of sheetmetal, seated upon bracket-arms d which project from the stem.

Serin No. 550,742.
E is a deflector, supported below chamber C and adjustably connected to stem A, it being provided for such purpose with a boss c which carries a set-screw 8. It acts as a shield which prevents the upward draft from striking directly gas-outlets c and interfering with the discharge of the gas therefrom.
F is a marginal, annular defleetor supported on the inner side of chimney D and provided with a central opening f through which the flame passes upwardly. It confines the heat and by deflecting the flame centrally toward the upper part of chamber C, serves to heat that particular part of it.
II is a central disk detlector supported in the draft chimney above the flame and serves to spread the heat as it leaves the chimney. It is provided with a suspender-rod h, whereby it is supported on a bar 10 which rests upon the Lipper edge of the chimney.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
l. In a gas-burner, the combination of a,
its wall, a shield supported on the stem be-v low this chamber and spaced therefrom so as to be below the gas-outlet openings therein, a draft-chimney, an internal marginal deflector supported in the chimney and 0pposite the burner-chamber, and a spreader supported above both. y
' 2. In a gas-burner, the combination of a burner-supply pipe which is open at its upper end and a chamber supported on this end from which it receives as, there being notches in this end of the pipe to facilitate free passage of gas into 'this chamber, said chamber being completely closed except for the flame-supplying gas-outlets which are in its lower part, whereby said chamber is surrounded by vthe burning gas and heated thereby for the purpose of pre-heating the gas passing through it and before it reaches gas-burner,the combination of. aV
chamber which surrounds this end and the to direct Haine and heat against it for th Wall of Which, in its upper part, is coneshaped, and provided in its lower part with gas-outlets, a draft-chimney supported so as tosuri'ound this chamber, and an internalL annular d-efiector supported in the draftchirnney opposite the conical part of the chamber a-nd inclined tow-ard thi-s part so as purpose of heating thesame.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aliX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. CHARLES HOFF. Witnesses:
