SHAMPOO-SHIELD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Dono'rnr i nLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shampoo-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in shampoo shields, and has for its object the protection of the body and clothing of a person having the head, hair or scalp shampooed, washed or otherwise treated.

I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention adjusted or partially adjusted upon the head of a person ready for use; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the upper surface of my invention, showing its manner of construction.

My invention is composed of a steel frame (D D), covered with rubber-coated sheeting (A), the frame consisting of a steel rod extending around the two sides and upper end of the shield, the rubber sheeting (A) being stretched over the frame and pasted or fastened to it with rubber cement or paste. Near the top or upper end of the shield is an opening tl'irough the rubber sheeting which is covered with pure dental dam rubber firmly cemented to the rubber sheeting (C), and through this last-mentioned rubber (C) is a circular opening of a sufficient size and shape to admit the head of a person.

In order to make use of the shield in the manner proposed by me, it is held above the head of the person to be operated upon and the hair of such person drawn through the opening (B), after which the shield is pressed downward, (as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing) until all of the hair is brought through to the upper surface of the shield, the rubber (C) being stretched, and by reason of its elasticity coming in close contact with the forehead, face and back of the neck, thus preventing liquid prepara tions and water used in shampooing from coming in contact With other parts of the body or the clothing of the person being treated.

To the top of the upper end of the shield is attached a hook or loop (F), to which a chain or cord is fastened. The other end Specification of Letters Patent.

of this cord is fastened to the ceiling or some object directly above, and the length of the cord so adjusted as to hold the shield in its proper position.

At the two lower corners of the shield are attached loops (E E), similar to the loop at the top (F). A cord is fastened to these loops (E E) and drawn tight. from one to the other, said cord being somewhat shorter than the length of the sheeting between the two lower corners, thus giving the upper or top surface of the shield a concave shape.

The shield is made of sutlicient size so that when it is adjusted upon a person, (as in Fig. 1) it will reach out over the face where the loop (F) is attached, to each side and down the back a sui'licient distance to catch all water and liquids used in shampooing and otherwise treating the hair and head, prevent it from coming in contact with the body or clothing of the person upon whom the same is used, and by reason of the concave surface of the shield cause it to drain to the bottom thereof, or to that portion of the shield between the points where the two loops (E E) are attached, and be caught. in any receptacle provided for the purpose.

I claim:

1. The combination in a shampoo shield of a steel frame, a piece of rubber sheeting, provided with an opening for the head of a person, secured to the frame, a piece of dental dam rubber having a central circular opening secured around the margins of the opening in the rubber sheeting, a hook or loop for attachment of a cord secured to the upper end of the shield, a hook or loop secured to each of the lower corners of said shield, and a cord extending from one of these last mentioned loops to the other for the purpose specified.

2. A combination in a shampoo shield, consisting of a frame, av covering of any suitablematerial, a hook attached to the upper end, a cord attached to the hook for the purpose of holding the shield in position, an opening through the covering of the shield of suflicient size and shape to admit the head of a person, a hook at each of the lower corners, and a cord extending from one of these hooks to the other, all substantially as set forth.
