Description
Aug. 25, m25;
D. C. SULLIVAN .HAXR PROTECTING MEANS Filed Feb. 6. 1925 i Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
DELLA. CLARKE SULLIVAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-PROTECTING- MEANS.
Application led February 6, 1925. Serial No. 7,345.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DELLA CLARKE SULLI- VAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Hair-Protecting Means, of which the following is a specification, sufficient to enable others to utilize the same.
The object of my invention is to afford convenient and adequate means whereby the main length or portion of themhairmani, Mthewlipman cranpimumrngmrpay be shielded and protectllmwlfilsgtthe portions thereof adj acent to the roots are being re-dyed to compensate for growth subsequent to the initial dyeing of the hair, so as to obviate change or deepening of color, or streaking or contamination of such original dye; and the invention consists essentially of a moisture proof container for pendent hair lengths provided with a closure device adapted to clasp a lock of hair in such manner as to exclude liquid therefrom, all as hereinafteru fully set forth,
In the accompanying drawing I illustrate a practical embodiment of the essen,- tial features of my invention in a hair prtecting device of the character designated, although I do not limit myself to the identical configuration and construction of component parts and appliances shown by way of exemplification since modifications in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients may be resorted to with like results and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
l/Vith this understanding Fig. 1, represents a side elevation of one form of my hair receptacle provided with mouth clamping means;
Fig. 2, is a view of the mouth and of the hair receptacle;
Fig. 3, is a similar view, illustrating the curvature ofthe mouth extremity;
Fig. 4, is av section taken upon plane of ,line 4--4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5, is a sectional view like unto Fig.
4, of the top of the hair receptacle, showing an alternative construction.
The body of the bag or hair receptacle B, is formed of rubber or any other suitable moisture proof material, as may be found most expedient. The mouth of the bag B, is reinforced by means of elastic cushion pads 29, p, incorporated in the edge folds b, l?, as shown more particularly in Fig. 4, of the drawing, and on one side edge of the mouth is incorporated a rigid stiffener S, to act as one member of the clamping means, the other member thereof consisting of the binding bar or member C", which is articularly connected at one end, as at o, to the aforesaid stiflener C, and formed at its other or otherwise free extremity with a snap fastening o', for engagement with the opposed protuberant end s, of said stiftene-r S.
The stifener S, and the binder C, if made of metal, are preferably coated with rubber or equivalent moisture proof material.
One or more of my hair rotectors may be used simultaneously accor ing to requirements. Ordinarily several will be used in conjunction toinclude several locks or strands of hair located on diiferent parts of the head. Each strand of hair, before insertion in the bag B, is preferably wound around a crimper, as: indicated in Fig. 4, of the drawing, to facilitate manipulation and insertion.
As hereinbefore intimated dyeing of the hair adjacent to the roots thereof is desirable after initial dyeing of the full length of the hair in order to compensate for growth, and my whole object is to revent the re-dyeing operation from affecting the portions of the hair originally dyed, so as not to alter or impair the shade or color thereof. Furthermore, in washing the hair to remove the dye-paste or liquid dye, my device prevents the water from reaching any of the hair except the portion the operator wishes to cleanse. I
The protector may be made of various shapes and sizes, with the mouth closure means either straight or curved. The elastic pads encased in the mouth of the bag not only insure a firm, Water tight hold on the strand of hair, but also prevents injury thereto.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, hair protecting` means of the character designate-d,
comprising a hair receptacle consisting of a bag of moisture proof material the mouth edges of the bag being formed with elastic cushion pads7 and clamping means for securing` the edgesv of said bag in closed relationship around a strand of hair, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
DELLA CLARKE SULLIVAN.
