LOUIS C. VVEGEFARTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'HAIR-CRIMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,984, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed January 2,1890. Serial No. 335,663. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, Louis C. WEGEFARTH, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair Crimpers or Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for crimping or curling hair; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a crimperbody with the cap applied. Fig. 2 shows the cap removed from the body. Fig. 3 shows a flexible hood or covering applied to the crimper. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a flexible hood.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates the crimper body or spindle, consisting of a tube or cylinder of suitable material, such as metal, papier-mach, or other substance. The hair is wound about the body A, and is held wound by a separate semi-cylindrical springcap 13. Heretofore the capsB were hinged to the body, and the swinging of the cap onto the body would tend to produce a drawing or pulling action, by which the hair would be slid along the body A longitudinally to said body, thereby pulling the hair and causing annoyance.
In my device the spring-cap is entirely detachable from the body, and when the hair is wound about the body the cap B is set squarely onto the body and sprung squarely into place on said body, so that all parts of the body being clasped by the cap at the same instant the hair is not slid or drawn longitudinally along the body, but is kept lying evenly on the body, so as to produce a neat and uniform curl.
It is often desirable to keep the hair dry while on the crimper, since moistening of the hair would tend to make the hair limp and undo the curl. To prevent improper access of moisture, a flexible hood or covering 0, of such material as rubber or water-proof cloth, is provided. the body A, and the cap B being applied in place, the hood 0 is then passed over the cap 13 and body A, Fig. 3, thus preventing access of moisture and causing the curl to be kept firm and dry. The hood 0 can be made to partially or entirely surround and inclose the body and cap, as desired.
Sometimes the hair when wound on the body or spindle is moist, and to enable said moisture to evaporate and the hair to dry the cap B may be perforated or provided with air-holes D at suitable places, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2. The hood 0 will be found very convenient in case the wearer goes in bathing or goes out in moist Weather. As the hood 0, body A, and cap B can be readily removed, it is not necessary for the wearer to remove said parts until the moment before entering society, so that the curl will be firm and neatin appearance when entering society. If the spindle A is hollow, a hot iron can be inserted into the spindle, if desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hair-erimper, the combination, with the body or spindle A, of a separate semicylindrical spring-cap B, adapted to sit over the spindle and to be applied squarely thereto, said cap being entirely detachable from said spindle, substantially as described.
2. In a hair-crimper, the combination, with the body or spindle A, of a spring-cap B, adapted to sit over the spindle A and to be applied squarely thereto, and a flexible hood or covering 0, adapted to sit over the cap and spindle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS C. IVEGEFARTH.
