To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Fnnnnnrcx FELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds and more particularly to the class most commonly entitled extension beds.

An object of this invention is to provide a bed which can be very readily converted either from a single into a double bed or a double into a single bed according to the number of the occupants.

Another object is to produce a bed which will occupy as litttle space as possible when not in use and which can be extended in a moments notice whenever desired.

A further object is the provision of a bed having extensible head and foot rails which may be adjusted in order to transform the device from a single to a double bed.

A still further object is the production of an extension bed provided with a pair of superposed springs which when the bed is extended can be placed alongside of each other to accommodate more than one person.

Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel constructions, formations and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved extension bed adjusted to accommodate one person. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the bed extended. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the letters a and l) designate the corner posts on opposite sides of the bed. Vertical standards 10 extend from the floor to a suitable distance above the end rails 1, are secured at points substantially intermediate their ends to the inner ends of the outer sliding members 6, and are connected to the posts I; by the brace rods 11. Sliding rods 12 are secured to the posts a and pass through suitable guides 13 carried by the vertical supports 10 to which they may be rigidly attached by means of set screws 1d. Slots or recesses 15 are formed in the posts a and Z) and are adapted to receive the inner ends of the sliding members 5 and G and hold the several parts more firmly in their normal positions. Pins 16 extend from the outer sliding members 6 in the path of stops 17 carried by the inner sliding members and limit the movement of the sliding members in an outward direction.

The foregoing description applies to my device when it is to be used as a single bed and itis obvious that all that is necessary to convert the same into a double bed is to press the posts a and Z) outward until the pins 16 contact with the stops 17. In this operation the head and foot rails are extended outward until the connecting slat 9 assumes a position in the center of the bed as illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawings and likewise the rods 12 are moved outwardly through the guides 13 carried by the standards 10 which assume a position in the center of the head and foot of the bed. The superposed springs 4 may then be placed alongside of one another with their inner sides resting upon the slat 9 and their outer sides upon the shoulder 3 of the side members 1.

1. The combination of a pair of head and foot posts, side rails connecting the head posts with the footposts, extensible end rails connecting the head posts and the foot posts comprising a pair of outer and inner sliding sections, T-flanges formed upon the inner sliding sections and adapted to move in grooves formed in the other sections, stops carried by the sliding sections to limit their outward movement, vertical supporting standards connected to the outer slidingsections, fixed rods connecting the standards with the posts on one side, rods connected to the posts on the opposite sides and adjustably connected to the standards, shoulders formed upon the side rails, springs resting upon the shoulders, a slat connecting the inner sliding sections and forming a support for the springs, pins extending from the standard and overlying the extensible end rails, and stops carried by the end rails to engage the pins and limit the extension of the bed.

2. A bed for the purpose described comprising head and foot posts, side rails con necting the head posts to the foot posts, extensible end rails connecting the head posts slidable in the guides.

3. An extension bed comprising head and foot posts, side rails connecting the head posts to the foot posts, extenslble end ralls connecting the head posts and the foot posts,

intermediate posts carried bythe rails, fixed connecting rods secured to the upper ends of the intermediate posts and the head and foot posts upon one side of the bed, brace rods secured to the head and foot posts upon the opposite side of the bed, and extending through guides upon the intermediate posts, and set screws extending through the guides and providing a means whereby the brace rods can be retained in their adjusted positions.
