HYGIENIC DESK.
Application filed April 8, 1910.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYssn Louis, a citizen of the French Republic, and resident of Auxerre, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hygienic Desks Adapted to be Adjusted to Suit any Height, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hygienic desk adapted to be adjusted to suit any height of children and adults for work done upright or seated.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows a side view of the desk. Fig. 2 is a front view of same; Fig. 3 shows a top plan view of one half of the desk top. Fig. 1 is a view of a somewhat modified detail.
The desk proper 1 of the hygienic Writing desk which forms the subject matter of this invention, is stationary; it is carried by four pillars 2 secured to two lower cross bars 3 carried by feet 4. The desk 1 is closed at the top by a stationary plank or top 5 engaged in a groove 5 and by another top plank (3 which is movable in grooves G and hingedly connected. so as to form an American shut ter sliding in grooves or on suitable guides, The desk is opened by pushing this shutter from the front to the back so as to engage it immediately under the fixed part. When it is desn'ed to close the desk again, the shutter is again drawn forward where it may be locked by means of a lock. A book shelf 7 mav be secured under the rear part of the desk 1.
The desk top is composed of a stationary frame 8 which is inclined and incloses an inner movable panel 9 forming a folding flap, and of a horizontal platform 10. The frame 8 is secured at the right and the left to two sliding members 11 sliding in the side Specification of Letters Patent.

walls of the desk 1 and below the latter between two grooved guide-ways 12 secured at their top to the desk 1 and at their bottom to the cross members 3. The movable desk top may be stopped at the desired height by means of two pressure screws 13 carrying wings and arranged one at the right, the other at the left of the desk. Each of these screws passes through a fixed nut 1st and acts upon the correspondin sliding member 11 through the medium of an abutment 15 and of a spring blade curved as shown at 16 (Fig. 1) or of a coiled or other spring 16 (Fig. 4). This pressure device, all the members of which are housed and concealed entirely inside the side walls of the desk 1, has for its object to annihilate the influence of the temperature on the wood by keeping the pressure constant and equal.
Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a desk, the combination of a base having vertical standards formed with grooves, a body supported on the standards and formed in its top and bottom with openings in alinement with the grooves in the standards, a movable cover in the top of the body, a top operating above the body, standards depending from the latter top and operating in the openings and the grooves in the standard, a hinged cover in the top above the body, threaded nuts on the inside of the body, screws operating in the threaded nuts in alinement with. the edges of the standards, a spring at the end of each screw, and a block interposed between each spring and standard to lock the latter in adjusted position.
I11 testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ULYSSE LOUIS.
