Description

Patentd JanflO, 1911 J. B. ATKINSON. SAW VISE. ARPLIOATION FILED JULY 23, 1910.
JOEL B. ATKINSON, OF MADISON, GEORGIA.
saw-visa Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 23, 1910. Serial No. 573,480.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL B. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Morgan and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved saw vise for clamping and holding a saw while the same is being sharpened or set, the object of the invention being to provide an improved vise of this character which may be vertically adjusted to suit the convenience of the user, which may be readily attached to a bench or other object while being used, and which is extremely cheap and simple, and may be readily repaired at slight cost.
WVith the above and other objectsin view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an improved saw vise constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective of the clamping bar.
The two front legs 1 of my improved saw vise are provided at their upper ends on their inner sides with recesses 2 in which is secured a vise 3, the said jaw connecting the upper ends of the legs 1, and being disposed at an angle thereto so that the said jaw is inclined rearwardly from and overhangs the rear sides of the said legs. A rung 4 also connects the legs 1 together, and is disposed at a suitable distance from the lower ends thereof. Between the lower portions of the front legs 1, are a pair of extensions 5 which are connected together at, and at a suitable distance from, by a pair of rungs 6. Each of the legs 1 is provided at its lower end with a clip 7 which engages and forms a guide for one of the extensions 5. The said extensions 5 are adjustable vertically with respect to the legs 1 to enable the vise to be longitudinally extended as may be required to cause the jaws to be adjusted to any desired height, according to the convenience of the user. The extensions 5 are provided on the sides thereof, which oppose the legs 1, with semi-cylindrical openings-8, and the legs 1 are also provided eachwith a semi-cylindrical opening 9. By adjusting the extensions to cause any of the openings 8 to coincide with the openings 9, bolts 10 may then be inserted in said coincidingopenings in order to secure the Patented Jan. 10, 19-11.
extensions to the legs at any desired adjustv ment as will be understood.
On the rear sides of the legs 1 at the upper ends of the latter are a pair of lever arms 11 which. are connected together at a suitable point by means of a rung 12. The legs 1 are provided with substantially U-shaped clips 13 which are secured thereto near their .upper ends and project rearwardly therefrom, and the lever arms 11 are disposed between the arms of the said clips and pivotally connected thereto by means of a stay link 11 which is here shown as a V-shaped rod disposed between the said lever arms and having outwardly extending ends 15 which pass through coincident openings in the lever arms 11, and the arms of the clips 13, and hence form the pivots for the said lever arms. Nuts 16 are screwed on the extremities of the stay link 14. On the central portion of the stay link is aclasp 17 pro vided with an opening 18 through which a nail or screw may be passed and driven into the top of a bench, table or other object against which it may be desired to secure the vise. The stay link 14 as will be understood, not only serves as a pivotal connection between the lever arms and the clips 13, but is itself also, pivotally mounted so that it may be, when not in use, swung between the lever arms and disposed out of the way, or swung outwardly therefrom and caused to overlie a bench, table or the like, to which it may be desired to attach thevise.
The front upper ends of the lever arms are recessed as at 19 to receive the lower portion of a aw 20 which is identical with the jaw 3, and coacts therewith to clamp a saw between them, the said jaw 20 being inclined and disposed at an angle to the lever arms 11 as shown.
A clamping bar 21 is provided at its ends with cross sectional elliptical cams 22 which operate in concave notches 23 in the opposing sides of the legs 1, and lever arms 11 near the lower ends of the latter, the said clamping bar extending transversely with respect to the legs 1, and lever arms as shown. At the center of the clamping bar is a lever 24: by means of which said clamping bar may be turned. A spring 25 connects one of the legs 1 and one of the lever arms, and serves, when the lower ends of the lever arms outwardly from the legs 1, and hence cause the jaw 20 to close against the jaw 3, so as to clamp a "saw blade between them.
In practice, all the parts of my improved saw vise, excepting the link, the spring, the clips and the bolts, are made of wood, so
7 that they can be readily produced at a very slight cost, and so that, should any part of the clamp-break, it may be readily replaced by another at minimum expense.
It is of great advantage to make the jaws of the vise of wood, as, should the jaws become uneven on their opposing surfaces, and tend to distort a saw when the latter is clamped between them, the said opposing surfaces of the jaws may be made smooth and plane in a very few minutes at any time by first clamping them moderately together, and then running a saw between them.
I claim A saw vise comprising a pair of legs, a jaw attached thereto, clips extending rearwardly from the legs, a pair of lever arms on the rear sides of said legs, a jaw connecting said lever arms at their upper ends, and opposed to the first mentioned jaw, a link rod hax'in a bent portion disposed bet-ween the sai lever arms, and outwardly extending end portions passing through said lever arms and said clips, and pivotally connecting the said lever arms to said clips, a clasp on said link rod, and means to operate sald lever arms to clamp or disengage said jaws.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
