EDWARD F. FISHER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed February 2, 1910. Serial No. 541,498.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that-I, EDWARD F. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to bedsteads, the purpose being to devise a construction which will facilitate the making of the bed and the arranging of the bed covering, the novelty residing in the head or foot piece which is constructed to fold, whereby access may be readily had to the mattress for turning the same and, when necessary, for airing the mattress or bed clothes, or for properly arranging the sheets or other bed covering.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the ac companying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure l is a view of a bedstead embodying the invention as seen from the foot. Fig. 2 is a side view of an end portion of the bedstead, the dotted lines showing the upper portion of the foot piece folded and the panel thereof extended so as to rest upon the bed. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail, showing the catch, stop and lever. Fig. l is a detail view of the joint formed between the members of the foot piece.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to either, or both end pieces of the bedstead, the drawing showing the application of the invention to the foot piece, but when applied to both end pieces each will be similarly constructed to admit of the upper section or part folding upon the bed so-as to attain the objects of the invention.
The foot or end piece of the bedstead is indicated by the letter A, the same comprising an upper section 1 and a lower section 2, the two sections being connected in a manner to admit of the upper section 1 folding upon the bed, as indicated in Fig. 2. The end piece may be of any construction, and, as shown, comprises tubing arranged to form a frame and having the upper portion closed by means of a panel B, which is mounted to swing upon the upper horizontal portion 3 of the end piece A, so that when the upper section 1 is folded to lie upon the bed the panel B may be swung clear of the section 1 to rest upon the middle portion of the bed, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 3. The panel B gives a finished appearance to the end piece and closes the space formed between the vertical and horizontal members of the upper section 1 thereof. Stops l project laterally from the ends of the panel B and are adapted to enga-ge the vertical members of the section 1, thereby limiting the movement of the panel and also providing convenient means to be readily grasped by the hand when it is required to swing the panel B upwardly and forwardly so as to lie upon the bed when the section 1 is folded thereon. The parts t provide in effect stops and hand pieces, as will be readily understood, and are formed by crimps in the outer members. of the panel. Vhen the section 1 is folded the height of the bed is reduced, thereby admitting of the mattress and bed covering being easily manipulated and conveniently reached, with the result that the labor of making the bed is greatly reduced.
The vertical side pieces or members of the end piece A are jointed in any manner. As shown a sleeve 5 is secured to the lower end of each vertical member of the section 1 and is provided with a lug 6 having a laterally eX- tending journal 7, which enters an opening in a corresponding lug 8 proj ected'from a sleeve 9 secured to the upper end of the vertical member of the section 2. Each of the sleeves 9 is provided with a lug 10, which is beveled on its outer edge and slightly undercut at its lower edge so as to make positive engagement with the lower horizontal rod or member of the panel B and thereby hold the section 1 in vertical position. The lugs 10 are located upon the outer or rear sides of the sleeves 9 diametrically opposite the hinge lugs 8. When the section 1 is in vertical position the ends of the sleeves 5 and 9 abut and by reason of the hinge joint formed between the sections 1 and 2 the upper section l is prevented from moving outward or rearward from a vertical position and when the lower portion of the panel B is engaged with the stop lugs 10 the section 1 is prevented from swinging inward at its upper end. The parts are so proportioned that when the section l is in vertical position the horizontal bar of the panel B springs under and into the undercut portions of the stop lugs 1G. Stops ll are slidably mounted upon the lower horizontal rod of the panel B and are adapted to be moved so as to engage the stop lugs l0 and thereby hold the lower portion of the panel clear of the stop lugs, so as not to engage thereunder, with the result that the section l may be folded upon the bed when desired. When the stops ll are moved so as not to engage the lugs l0 the lower portion of the panel B will engage under the stop lugs l0 when the section l is in vertical position and hold the same in place. The section l may be readily engaged with or be disengaged from the section 2 by pressing the lower ends of its vertical members inward, so as to cause the journals 7 to clear the hinge lugs 8, as indicated most clearly by the dotted lines in F ig. l. The hinge lugs 0 and 8 are arranged so as to overlap, the lug (i coming upon the inner sides of the lugs 8.
Rods or bars l2 are slidably mounted in the vertical members of the section l to provide an extended leverage to enable the said section to loe moved when supporting the weight of the mattress or bed covering. The inner ends of the rods or bars 12 are enlarged to form stops and thereby prevent the withdrawal of said rods from the vertical members of the section l when eX- tended. The projecting ends of the rods or bars l2 are enlarged to form grips as also stops to limit the inward movement of the rods when pushed within the members of the section l.
When it is required to air thesheets or bed covering the same are hung upon the section l and when it is required to turn the Y' sheets or bed covering the panel B is released from the stop lugs 10 and the section l is folded upon the mattress, after which the panel B is extended, thereby bringing the bed covering in convenient position to effect a turning thereof. Should it be required to air or turn the mattress, the latter is elevated at one end and the section l t-urned so as to engage under the elevated.
A end of themattress, after which the mattress -may be drawn over the upper portion of the section l to a middle point, after which the panel B may be swung so as to engage the projecting end of the mattress and together with the inward swinging of the section l result in reversing the mattress. In this operation the rods or bars l2 may be drawn outward to provide an increased leverage in order to enable the weight of the mattress to be handled with ease.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
l. A bedstead having an end piece comprising' a frame, and a panel closing the space of the upper portion of the frame and mounted to swing upon the upper horizont-al portion of said end piece.
A bedstead comprising an end piece consisting of an open frame, a panel closing the upper portion of the frame and mounted upon the upper horizontal member of the frame to swing thereon, and stops extended outwardly from opposite ends of the frame and adapted to form hand-pieces.
3. A bedstead comprising upper and lower sections hingedly connected, a panel mounted to swing upon the upper portion of the upper section, and stop lugs provided upon the lower section to engage with said panel and hold the upper section in vertical position.
e. A bedstead comprising upper and lower sections hingedly connected, a panel mounted to swing upon the upper portion of the upper section, stop lugs provided upon the lower section to engage with said panel and hold the upper section in vertical position, and stops movably mounted upon said panel to engage the lower section and prevent the panel from engaging with said stop lugs.
5. A bedstead comprising an end piece consisting of upper and lower sections hingedly connected, and a rod or bar slidably mounted upon the upper' section and adapted to be extended to provide an increased leverage to facilitate movement of said upper section when meeting with resistance. v
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD F. FISHER.
