Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 18, 1910. Serial No. 562,085.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR L. JOHNSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Streator, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to bracket-s such as are designed to be fastened to buildings for the support of staging; and it has for its object to provide brackets equipped with a simple and reliable safety attachment, adapted when the brackets are not in use to be expeditiously and easily detached from the horizontal members thereof so that the complete apparatus can be stored in a small space.

With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating two brackets equipped with my novel safety attachment. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one end of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan of the outer portion of the horizontal member of one bracket. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section of the lower portion of one of the standards comprised in the safety attachment. Fig. 5 is a View taken at a right angle to Fig. 4.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A A are the brackets, and B is the safety attachment, as a whole. The brackets A are preferably, though not necessarily, foldable brackets of the general construction disclosed in my contemporary application filed Jan. 29, 1910, Serial Number 540,887, and it is therefore deemed unnecessary to specifically describe the same except to say that in accordance with my present invention the horizontal channel-bar member a of each bracket is provided in the top of its outer portion with a plain slot 1) and a keyholeslot 0.

The safety attachment B comprises a rail 03, preferably of wood, and end standards 6 which, like the brackets A, are preferably of metal. Each of the said end standards 6 is made up of a channel-bar upright f equipped with a holder 9 in which the rail cl is secured by a nail h or other means, and

a channel-bar horizontal-member or foot 71, riveted at y to the inner. sides of the side walls of the upright f and having a de pending transversely-disposed oblong button In and a reduced circular portion Z above the same, and also having a button m, of a shape and size to pass vertically through the large portion of the keyhole slot 0, and a reduced portion n above said button m.

In assembling the parts of my improvements, the brackets A are disposed at right angles to the feet 2' of the safety-attachment B and are adjusted to enable the oblong buttons 70 to pass through the bracket slot-s b. The brackets are then swung into alinement with the feet 71 to secure the buttons in at the undersides of the top walls a, and to enable the buttons m to pass downward through the large portions of the keyhole slots 0. The safety attachment is then moved outward on the brackets to carry the buttons at below the reduced portions of the keyhole slots 0, whereupon, as will be readily understood, the safety attachment will be safely and rigidly attached to the brackets.

To disconnect the safety attachment from the brackets, the operation described is reversed, and then the brackets and the safety attachment can be shipped or stored in a small space.

While I have shown and described one form of my invention, it is to be understood that I am not limited to the details or the form or relative arrangement of parts disclosed, but that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit thereof.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. The combination with brackets having horizontal channel-bar members and also having a slot and a keyhole-slot in the top Wall of each of said members, of a safety attachment comprising a rail, and standards carrying said rail and each made up of a channel-bar upright, and a channel-bar foot fixed to and extending at an angle from the upright and having at its underside an oblong button and a button of a shape and size to pass through the large portion of the keyhole slot.
