To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Platen-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
In certain prior Letters Patent of the United States, notably Letters Patent No. 427,448 granted to me on May 6, 1890, I have shown and described a means for controlling or guiding the platen of a job press, consisting essentially of a pair of rockers for the platen to roll upon and a cam plate for causing the platen to follow a particular course during its movements. In inoorporating the rockers and cam plate upon the platen, however, certain obstacles have been encountered on account of the difiiculty, on the one hand, of casting and finishing the platen with these parts integral and, on the other hand, of uniting the parts to the platen with suflicient rigidity when they have been formed separately therefrom.
One object of the present invention is to provide a construction according to which side plates embodying the rockers and controlling cams may be satisfactorily employed one on each side of the platen; the invention in this respect relating particularly to the manner of constructing said side plates and to the mode of securing them in position with the specific object of providing a construction which shall involve the fewest and simplest operations in manufacturing and assembling.
Another object of the present invention has to do with the means for attaching the frisket fingers to the platen. Ordinarily they are pivoted along the lower front edge of the platen, thus requiring the platen to be provided with a projection or at least to be finished along the lower edge in some re spect so as to form a means of attachment for said fingers. In the present case each of the side pieces in which the rockers and controlling cams are incorporated is provided with extensions the ends of which reach substantially into the plane of the face of the platen, and these extensions are formed so as to receive the frame for the casting constituting the platen. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the side pieces embodying a rocker and controlling cam. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the two parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 united, and also illustrating a portion of one of the connecting rods, the frisket fingers and tympan clamps and, Fig. 4c is a view in rear elevation, partly in section, showing the platen and side piece united.
For a detailed description of the cam slots 60 and their particular function in guiding the platen as it moves upon the rockers 50, reference may be had to the Letters Patent above mentioned; for, as the present invention is only concerned with the form of the plate in which these rockers and slots are placed and its manner of attachment to the platen, no description of its function will be required. From the drawings it will be seen that each of these plates is formed with an annular flange 80 which is adapted to embrace a boss 81 provided upon the corresponding end of the platen around the shaft 70 to the ends of which the connecting rods 71 are attached. Each plate also has two raised portions 82 provided with bolt holes and fitting over corresponding machined portions 83 also provided with bolt holes. In assembling the machine, each of these side pieces is inserted over the corresponding boss around the shaft 70 and is then bolted to the platen in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3. The addition of the boss and of the annular flange around the boss increases the material around the end of the shaft where the greatest strain comes and thereby clearly strengthens this portion of the press. Moreover, the bolt 84 it will be noted, is to one side of the shaft and practically in the line of the connecting rod so that this bolt not only assists in clamping the side piece to the platen but also serves to resist to a considerable degree the strain imparted by the connecting rod. The bolt 84 is substantially underneath the shaft in the platen-and serves particularly to resist side strains which occur in an outward direction.
Each of the side pieces is provided with an extension 85 which reaches forward underneath the platen and one end of which lies substantially in the plane of the face of the platen, whereby it is possible to attach the frisket finger frame thereto and thus obviate the necessity of forming the platen with an attachment for this purpose. In the present'case each extension 85 is provided with a pivot 86 upon which the frisket frame 87 swings, the frisket fingers'88 being attached to the frame in any suitable manner.
It will be clear that the improvements permit of many modifications and variations and that therefore the structure shown and described may be departed from in many inv stances without avoiding the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a printing press, the combination with the platen, of side pieces for controlling the platen, means upon the sides of the platen for attaching the connecting rods,
' the side pieces embracing said means, and
bolts for securing the side pieces to the platen.
2. In a printing press, the combination with the platen, of side pieces for controlling the platen, means upon the sides of the platen for attaching the connecting rods, the side pieces embracing said means, and two bolts to secure each side piece to the platen, one of said bolts being to one side of said means and the other bolt being underneath said means.
3. In a press, the combination with the platen, of side pieces for controlling the platen, a shaft extending through the platen, bosses upon the sides of the platen around the shaft, the side pieces embracing the bosses respectively, and means for securing said side pieces to the platen.
4. In a press, the combination with the platen, of side pieces for controlling the platen, a shaft extending through the platen, bosses upon the sides of the platen around the shaft, an annular flange upon each of the side pieces fitted upon the corresponding boss, and means to secure the side pieces to the platen.
5. In a press, the combination with the platen, of separately formed side nieces for controlling the platen, the said side pieces having each an extension the end of which lies substantially in the plane of the face of the platen, and frisket fingers pivoted to said extensions.
6. In a press, the combination with the platen, of separately formed side pieces for controlling the platen, the said slde pieces having each an extension the ends of which lie substantially inthe plane of the platen, and an attachment pivoted to said extensions and constituting a frame for the frisket fingers.
