Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS E. S. CRANE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EDWIN D. PARKHURST, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-STAYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,040, dated March 21,1876 application filed September 13, 1e75.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. S. CRANE, of Newark, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stays, Corners, and Hinges for Trunks, of which the following is a specification The invention relates to improvements in stays, corners, and. hinges for trunks. It has for its objects the production of a device which combines in itself a means of effecting the offices of a corner, stay, and hinge, the particular use depending upon the construction adopted, as will more fully appear hereinafter.
A A are corner-plates, constructed to be attached to the body and top of the trunk, respectively, upon the back corners and near the point of contact of the body and lid.
-They are provided with apertures a, by means of which they are fastened in place in any usual manner.
The plate A, which is secured to the body, is provided with the vertical recessed projection B, thatis upon the end side of the plate, and provided with the bearing 1) and curved. slot 0.
The plate A, which is secured to the top, has the depending projection C, which is con- -formed with relation to the projection B, and provided with the pivot D and stud e, the former working in the bearing 12, and the latter in the slot. 0, the parts being suitably adapted to each other.
Upon the back side of the plates 'are the projections F, the construction and relations of which are clearly shown in the drawings. They fulfill the office of a stay for the-top, and are attached and arranged to hold it at any angle that may be desired, to effect which the and protect the pivot and teat.
contiguous beveled parts -i are inclined at will and separated more or less, according to circumstances. When employed in connection with the projections B and C, which form a hinge, as hereinbefore set forth, they are so constructed that when'they are in contact the stud or teat 6 will be likewise in contact with the upper end of the slot 0, whereby all strain is taken from the pivot D, the stud serving to enhance the operation of the stays as well as to effect its more important oflices.
Modifications of the hinging mechanism will also occur to the skilled mechanic. Thus the vertical projection B may be in the form of a box'or case with suitable chambers, in lieu of the bearing b and curved slot 0, or the hearing and slot, or either of them, may be covered by caps or otherwise,to exclude the dust But these variations are of inconsiderable consequence.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
The within-described combined corner and binge, consisting of the plate A, provided with the projection B, having the bearing 11 and slot 0, and plate A, provided with the projection C, having the pivot D and stud e, constructed substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in stays, corners, and hinges for trunks, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 4th day of August, 1875.
