Description
R. E. L. JANNEY. GUARD ARM FOR COUPLINGS.
APPLICATION HLED OCT-14,1916.
Patented Apr. 24,1917.
U IT D STATES PATENT op nion,
ROBERT E. I). JANNEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOI-s, ASSIGNOR To AME IcAN STEEL FOUNDRIES, OF NEW ORK,'N. Y A CORPORATION. OF NEW JERSEY.
GITARD-ARM FOB COUPLINGS.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that. I, ROBERT E. L. J ANNEY,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard-Arms for Couplings, of which the following is a speci- It is well known that car couplers are sub-' jected to severe strains and that the guard arm receives many of the most severe of these strains. It is an object of the present invention to provide a reinforcement for the guard arm, the metal being so distributed as to provide for a maximum efiiciency. Not only is it desirable to provide for the maximum resistance to strain, but likewise for ease in the production of the casting. To this end means should be provided for supporting the cores. If such means are not provided, many faulty castings will be produceddue to theshifting of the cores. The desired result as to all these particulars is secured in the structure illustrated herewith.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car coupler, the view being taken from the guard arm side. I
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on the lines 22, 3-3, respectively, of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 is a plan view'partly in section.
The construction herein I disclosed is intended as an improvement on construction of my application, Serial Number 41869, filed July 26, 1915. I
In the drawings it will be seen that the coupler-head 10 is provided with the usual ears 11 and a guard arm consisting of a vertical wall or web 12, which is suitably reinforced by means of the converging upper and lower webs 13, 14 and-the intermediate horizontal web 15. These webs or ribs merge into or join the vertical wall 12 at the extremities of the webs. In order to brace and add materially to the effectiveness of the converging webs 13, 14, I unite the margins thereof at points intermediate the Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
to a novel guard Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial No. 125,539.
I for the production of walls the correct thickness. While I haveshown the webs 16, 17
as extending horizontally, and this is the preferred construction, yet substantially the same advantages would accrue if the webs were not so placed. The object is to provide a brace or strut which will serve to prevent the collapsing or distortion of the converging webs.
It will be understood also that the exact form and arrangement is not essential to the advantageous utilization of the invention and .thatmodifications may .be made therein without departure from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
1. In a guard arm for car couplers, the combination of a vertical wall, converging outer webs, and webs joining the edges of said converging webs to said vertical wall, substantially as described.
2. A car coupler guard arm havin a vertical wall, converging outer strengthening and an intermediate horizontal web, and
stiifening webs joining the edges of said inclined webs to said vertical wall, said stiffening webs being apertured to provide a passage between the. cavity inclosed by said websand the space adjoining said horizontal web, substantially as described.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 11th day of October, 1916.
ROBERT E. L. JANNEY.
