Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Dwmnnn,
a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in .Superheaters for Locomotives, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a. superheater for a locomotive of the type known as an articulated compound is provided with two the other with the high pressure cylinders on one frame and the low pressure cylinders on the other frame.
The locomotive boiler is rigidly secured to the rearframe and is adapted to-radially slide upon the forward frame.
By my invention I am enabled tomount the superheater in the smoke box of the locomotive, connecting one side of the superheater with the high pressure cylinder and the other side of the superheater with the low pressure cylinder.

In the present instance the superheater consists of two headers e, e at the lower end, and two 'headers e2 at the uppei` end connected together by a pipe et., The upper and' lower headers are connected by curved tubes e* arranged. on each side of the smoke box, as indicated in superheater is connected to the exhaust passage of the high pressure cylinders and the other sideof the superheater is connected to the steam inlet passage of the low pressure cylinders. l f A F is a transverse steam pipe coupled at each end to the exhaust passage 'b' of the high pressure cylinders B. The connections may be slightly modified without departing from the main -f ature of the invention which is to place a s perheater in the smoke box of the boiler 1on the rear frame and couple it to cylinders on the` forward frame of the locomotive.
a Thus it will be seen that by the above de- .scribcd invention I am enabled to superheat the steam "after it passes from the high pressure cylinders and before it enters the low pressure cylinders in the type-of engine in which the low pressure cylinders are cai'- ried on a ffr'ame p ivoted to the frame carry' ing the high pressure cylinders.' Thus the .A steam enters the high pressure cylinders direct from =the dome of the locomotive boiler, escapes through the exhaust passage, enters the pipe F, passes through the pipe F', through section (1v of the fitting G, through the Apipe II to one side of the/superheater.
,The steam then passes around the superheater, escaping through the pipe I to the other arm g to the fitting Gr, then through the pipe K to the yoked fitting M, where the 'steam is divided, a portion going to the low pressure cylinders on one side of the locomotive. and the other portion going to the l h'e side of the locomotive opposite that on lwhich the pipe H -is placed lowpressure cylinders on the opposite sideY tofthis type of locomotive, in the present .instance through: the pipe C to' the nozzle C2 directly in the stack d3.'l
In some instances an opening may be made in the partition between the two passages of the fitting G and a valve g* .placed therein, as shown in Fig. 6 so that when it' is desired 'to cut out the superheater the valved passage can be opened to allowthe steam to pass directly. from the liigh pressure to the low pressure cylinders without passing throughthe superheater,

The combination in an articulated locomotive of two frames pivotally connected, a boiler rigidly mounted on one frame and overhanging the other'frame, high pressure cylinders on the frame to which the boiler is rigidly secured, low pressure cylinders on the other frame, a superheater in the smoke box of the boiler, a fitting having two passageways, a pipeconnected to one end of the first passage-way and to the high pressure cylinders7 exhaust ports, a pipe connected to the other end of the first passageway and to one side of the superheater, a pipe connected to one end ofthe second passage-way and to theopposite side of the siiperheater, and a pipe made in sections connected to the other end of the second pas` sage-way by a ball and socket joint and to the low' pressure cylinders by a ball and socket joint, said sectional pipe having a telescopic joint interposed between the two ball and socket joints.
