FIG. 2..-
u n-ma CARL J.
M'ELLIN, OF SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK.
STEAM-PIPE FOR .ARTICULATED LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
Application filed January 2, 1912. Serial No. 689,017.
To all ir/trmt it may color/wt Be it known that J, (Ann J. Munmx, ot
Schenectady. in the county of Schenectady and State. of New York, have invented a certain new and useful lmprt'ivement in Steam-Pipes tor Articulated Locomotives, of which improvement the 'l'ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to loconu'itives of the articulated or Mallet type, more particularly these that are ctptipped with superheatcrs, and its object is to provide means for delivery of steam to the high pret-isure cylinders of locomotives ot such whereby the. use of the belt pipe" and the resultant obstrutiwtion to the view ot t'zng'inecr will be avoided, and in the case of superhcater engines, connection may he made with the sitpifllltiuttll as directly as possible.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: l*i ;ure l is a diagrammatic side view of an articulated compound locomotive, illustrating an application of my invention; Fig. 2, a side. view, partly in section. aml on an enlarged scale, of a portion ol the same, a transverse section through the smoke box.
My invention is herein cxcmpliticd as applied in a lizcomotive engine. of the Mallet articulated compound type, comprising a rear frame, 9. supported on a plurality of driving wheels, 1, and a l'ront t'ramc, 8, supported on a plurality ot' driving wheels, l. The rear t'rame, as in the regular practice in locomotives of this type, carries at. its front end, which is located nearly at the middle of the length of the boiler, a pair ot' high pressure cylinders, 12", the pistons ot' which are coupled to tl'tlllh inn wheels, l. aml the trout pair ol low pressure cylinders, t2". the pistons ot which are coupled to crank pins on the driving wheels. 1. 'l'hc boiler, l. is lived to the rear l'rame, ti, and the trout and rear 'l'rames are coupled, in the longitudinal central plane of the locomotive, by a pivot pin. 8', the l'orvvard portion of the boiler being. thus, as is characteristic in locomotives ol' this type, tree to swing or traverse laterally, relatively to' the trout frame, 8, in passing curves.
in the practice of my invention, the valve chests, 12', ot' the high pressure cylinders, 12', are connected with the main steam suptype,
and, Fig. i,
1 tending rcarwardly, below the the i "any suitable and bination of a boiler, pins on' thy drtvt'rame carries a l l l ply pipe, til. which leads from a throttle valve chamber, 42, located in the dome, ll, of the boiler, either directly in. ordinary saturated steam locomotives, or through the intermediatitm ot a super-heater, 70, when a device of that class is applied, by branch steam pipes, (33, located within the smoke box, l, and lateral steam pipes, 65, eonnectcd, at their forward ends, to the lower ends of the branch steam pipes, 63, and ex- 7 shell of the boiler, 4, to the valve chests, 12*, of the high pressure cylinders, 12. v
in order to protectthe lateral steam pipes, ttf ti-om the cooling action of the atinosphcre, they are incascd in lagging, of preferred material, and ball joint rings. (35", are titted between the ends of said pipes and the valve chest noz- Zlcs or tlanged openings to which they are connected: llxpansion andcontraction of the pipes, 65, are compensated by slip or expansion joints, (3.3". which are, preferably as shown, located adjacent to the high pressure valve chests.
It will be seen that by the above construction, the usual belt pipes are dispensed with, and connections cll'ected with a superheater or with the trout T head of the main supply pipe as directly as is practicable. The lateral steam pipes. (33, beneath and close to the boiler shell, do not obstruct the view ot the engineer, nor oll'er any obstruction to the reverse gear of the forward cylinders or any other moving members of the locomotive.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters atcnt:
t. In an articulated locomotive, the coincylinders liXcd relati\el to the boiler. in rear ot the smoke box thereof. a main steam supply pipe within the boiler, branch steam pipes communicab in; therewith. and extending downwardly in the smoke box of the boiler, and lateral steam pipes extending rcarwardly adjacent to the boiler shell from the branch steam pipes to the cylinders.
'2. In an articulated locomotive. the comnation of a boiler, cylinders lixed relatively to the boiler, in rear of the smoke box thereof, a main steam supply pipe within the boiler, branch steam pipes comnmnicating therewith and extending downwardly in the smoke box of the boiler, lateral steam pipes, extending rearwar-lly adjacent to the boiler shell from the branch pipes to the cylinders, and expansion joints in said lateral steam pipes.
3. In an articulated locomotive, the comj bination of a boiler, cylinders fixed relatively to the boiler, in rear of the smoke box thereof, a main steam supply pipe Within the boiler, a sgperheater connected thereto,
branch steam pipes communicating With said superheaterzand extending downwardly 16 in the smoke box of the boiler, and lateral steam pipes extending rearwardly adjacent
