My inventionrelates to certain improve- ,W Vments in the high pressure steam supply piping leading from the forward end of the boiler to the cylinder structures on the front and rear' frames of a simple mallet type locomotive. Y
One object of my invention is to provide supply pipes which extend from the smokeboX end of the vlocomotive to the cylinder structure at the forward end of therear frame of asimple mallet type locomotive. Thevpiping arrangement, connecting the rear v cylinder structure with the forwardcylinder structure, forms the subj ect-matter of a separate application filed by James C. Maris on the 10th day of May, 1929, under Serial No'. 362,036, and I lay no claim to this particular part of the locomotive.
A further object of the invention is to dispense with the short slip joints which connect the boiler at the smoke-box end directly ywith the front cylinder structure in some types of locomotives.

The drawings illustrate the forward end of a locomotive in outline, a number of the parts being omitted in order to more clearly'illus trate my invention.
`10 is the rear frame of the locomotive which supports the boiler 11. The forward end of the boiler overhangs the forward frame 12, which is connected to the rear frame by a link and universal coupling 13. 14 is a cylinder structure mounted on the forward end of the rear frame, and 15 is a cylinder structure mounted on the forward yend of the front frame. 16 is a dry pipe within the boilerofv the locomotive and is coupled to a superheater header and throttle valve structure 1'?l in the smoke-box of the boiler. Leading from` this throttle valve structure are two side pipes 18, which are connected by elbows 19 with the outside steam pipes 20, one at each side of the boiler.

One branch A24 of each T joint 22'is coupled to the steam connectionofthe cylinder structure on that side of the locomotive.. The other joint 25 is connected' by a diagonal' U-shaped. branch pipe 26 to one branch of a Y-shaped chamber 27 formedA in the'saddle 28 of theV cylinder structure 14. The two passages of. thefY',which connect with the two side steam pipes, unite in a' single passage through which the-live steam passes to the pipe 40 leading from the rear cylinder 'structure to theforward cylinder structure. j
The pipe 40 is made two'sections.40y and .v 40". `The section 40" is attached to a socket member vof a balliand-socket oint 29 which is rigidly secured toa cross-tie 30 extending from one 'side forward frame to the other. The section 40EL is coupled to the rear cylin-v der structurelby a ball-and-socket joint 31; In the present instance, the pipev section 40Et has a slipjointn32, andthe pipe section 40" extends` into a slip joint 33 in the forward cylinder structure 15. The rear cylinder structure 14 consists of a saddle 28 which is located between the side members of the rear frame and the two cylinder castings 34 which Vare secured to the outside of said frame. 'j

v *Thef pipe 40 communicates with a YV-passage 36 in'theyforward saddle 37 of the forward cylinder .structure,and' pipes 38 lead l fromthe passage36 to thel steam passages in the cylinder structures 39.
The exhaust steam from the rearucylinderstructure passes through pipes 44 tolthe'noz.- Zle structure inthe smoke-box, while the exhaust steam from the. cylinder vstructure at the forward end of theffront frame' passes through a pipe 42 to the nozzle, and in this latter pipe there is a slip joint 43.
The pipe 42 has the usual ball-and-socket joint at the cylinder structure and a ball-andsocket connection at the nozzle, to allow for lateral movement of the forward frame as well as a certain amount of verticalvmovement. n
By the above construction all of the steam is conveyed from the steam pipes within the smoke-box of theboiler directly to the rear cylinder structure, where it is divided, a portion of the steam being directed to the valve chests of the rear cylinder structure, While the balance of the steamis conveyed throughAV passages in the saddle of said structureto a mg to the forward cylinder structure on the front frame.

and two live steam pipes extending from the smoke-box end of the boilerv to the cylinders on the rear frame, said pipe having an outside T coupling, one branch ofthe Tvbeing directly connected to the valve chest of a cylinder, the other branch ofl the vT extending to the rear of the saddle and communicating vso withr the pipe leading from the rear cylinder structure to the forward cylinder structure.
