' AB'IICULATED LOCOMOTIVE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed December 12, 1908. Serial No. 487,184.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. VAUCLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadel hia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain mprovements in Articulated Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a superheater for a locomotive of the type known as an articulated compound, in which there are two frames, oneframe being pivoted to the. other; the high pressure cylinders beingmounted on one frame and the low ressure cylinders being mounted on'the ot er frame. mounted on the rear frame and overhangs the forward frame. By my invention 1 am enabled to mount the superheater in the smoke box at the forward 'end of the boiler and connect it with the two sets of cylinders.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1, is a wide view, partly in sect1on, of sul'licient of an articulated compound locomotive to illustrate my invention; Fig. 2, is a trans verse sectional view on the line 22, Fig. l; and Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3, Fi 1.
A is the rear- 'rame of the locomotive and A is the forward frame, each having boxes for the axles of the driving wheels a, a, respectively. The two frames are pivoted together at a by any suitable connection.
B, B are the high pressure cylinders rigidly mounted on the frame A, and O, C are the low pressure cylinders rigidly mounted on the frame A. The hi h pressure cylinders B are connected by live steam pipes b to the steam dome (l' of the boiler D; this boiler is mounted rigidly on the rear frame A. and swings with it. The front end of the boiler overhangs the forward frame and has one or more saddles d which are 'arranged to slide upon sup orts 41 carried by the said frame, so that tie boiler is free to move radially over the forward frame in turning curves.
(l is the smoke box at the forward end of the'boiler and in this smoke box is mounted the superheater E of any form desired, providing it does not interfere with the internal arrangement of the smoke box.
The superheater shown in the drawings consists of two headers e, e at the lower end and two headers e 6 at the upper end,
The boiler is' rigidly T pressure cylinders.
and connected together by a pipe 6; curved pipes e are arranged on each side of the smoke box and connect the upperand lower headers; One lower header is connected to the exhaust passage of the high pressure cylinders and the other lower header is connected to the steam inlet passage of the low F is a transverse pipe coupled at each end to the exhaust passage 6 of the high pressure cylinders B.
(Jr is a fitting, in the present instance so shaped as to provide two passages g, as shown in the drawings. A-longitudina pipe F is coupled to the transverse pipe F and communicates with the passage 9 of the fitting; the upper end of the assage 9 communicates with a longitudinal pipe H coupled at its forward end to the header e of the superheater. The connections alluded to are all rigid, as the superheater is mounted in the smoke box of the boiler which is rigidly secured to the frame A on which the cylinders B are mounted, but the con ncc'tions between the superheater and the cylinders on the frame A must be flexible.
I is a pipe leading from the header c of the super-heater rearwardly and communicates with the passage 9' in the fitting G. The fitting in the present instance is so shaped that the pipe H is on one side of the boiler and the pipe I is on the opposite side, but the arrangement of pipes may be modified, depending upon the general arrangement of the elements. of th'e locomotive and the position of the superheater carried by the boiler. The mssage g in the fitting G terminates in a socket g and mounted in this socket is the end of a pipe K, the other end of the pipe being mounted in a socket m of a yoke fitting M which is coupled to pipes m, m leading to the steam su ply passage of the low pressure cylinders C on the frame A. In the present instance the pipe K is made in three The central part is being a apted to slide in a packed section 7.: which is coupled to the part it having an upturned portion 70 adapted to the packed socket g The up turned portion has a ring is which holds it in position and yet allows it freedom to swing in the socket. The part 70 of the pipe K is at the opposite end and is similar in form to the part'lc and ada ted to the packed socket m of the yoke fitting M. The
part It also has a ring 1766 to hold it in place and allow it to freely swing.
it will be understood that while I have shown a particular arrangement of pipes leading from the cylinders on one frame to the superheater in the smoke box and from the super-heater to the cylinderson the other frame, the arran ement of pipes may be modified without eparting from my invention, which is to mount the'superheater in the overhanging boiler section and connect it to the, two sets of cylinders of a locomotive of the articulated type.
The exhaust for the low pressure cylintiers is carried to the nozzle (i in the smoke box, in the ed pipe C. p
it will be seen that by the above arrangement the steam enters thehigh ressure. cylinders B, B direct fro1n.the orne of the boiler, then passes from the cylinderspresentinstance through a jointthrough the rigidly connected pipes to the.
superheater E situated in the present instance in the smoke box at the forward end of the boiler, and after passing through the supcrheater the steam flows through the ilexibly coupled pipes leading to the'low pressure cylinders on the forward frame and fronithese cylinders through thefiexible coupling to the exhaust nozzle in the, smoke box of the boiler.
1 claim l. The combination in a locomotive of e aaoi 2. The combination in a locomotivewQf the articulated type, of rear and forward frames, a boiler rigidly- -mounted on the rear frame and overhanging the forward frame, a cylinder on the forward frame, a
superheater carried by the'boiler, and a,
flexible connection between the superheater and the cylinder.
3. The combination in a locomotive of the articulated type, of a rear frame and a forward frame pivoted together, a boiler rigidly mounted on the rear frame, a high pressure cylinder mounted on the rear frame, a low pressure cylinder mounted on the forward frame, a superheater carried by the boiler, a connection between the high pressure cylinder and the su erheater, and
a flexible connection between t e superheater and thelow pressure cylinder.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
