Description

wrench aaai sie@ @met dimite.
lGEORGE c. TAFT, `or WORCESTER, MASSAcr-IUSETTS.
Letters PatentNo. 97,988, :lated Decemberl 14, 1869.
IMPROVEMET IN WRENCHES.
l The Schedule :eten-ed in these Letters Patent and making peut of the same.
' To all whom it may-.concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. TAFT, Aof' the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Mastion ot' the i same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part o'f Athis specification, `in whichl Figure 1` represents a: side view of my improved Figure 2 represents a back View ot! the same; and Figure 3`represents a section through the screen on `line A B, fig. 1.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will proeeed to describe itlnore in detail.
` The natnreoflmy invention relates `to that class of wrenches known as S, or forked wrenches; and
It consists in the peculiar manner of arranging and combining the rosette and screw with Ythe two parts which form the bar of the wrench, will be hereafterV explained.` l l l By referring to the draw' i'gs, it will be seen that the bar ofmy improved wrench is made in two parts, A and B. l C
These parts are flattened on their innerl sides, and
are held securely together by flanges' and grooves "at their ends, while at their centralpart they are curved outward in the forni of half cylinders a and b, which extend diagonally across the bars, while ilf'thevopening between said half cylinders, a1 e arranged the screw 'O and rosette D, by means of which the jaws of the wrench are operated.
The half'cylinder b, on the lower part B, of the bar, has ia head, c, caston one of its. ends, in which is lirmly secured one end of the screw C, while in the centre ot' the half cylinder a is formed an opening, in which fits the rosette D. v
At each side of the rosette D, and formed with the half. cylinderl a., are rings or anges e, thatl extend around beneath the screen C, as shown in tig. 3 of the drawings.
` The rosette D is provided with a screw-thread, corresponding to that upon the screw C, so that as the It will be seen that by constructing the wrench as above described, the screw C is protected by the semicylindrica-l parts ft and b, so that the thread is not lin able to become injured or to get clogged with dirt.
l The rosette and screwv being inca-sed in-this manner, makes the wrench very compact inform, andalso at the same time very strong and durable, and not liable to get ont of order. v
Having described my improved wrench,
What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentis- `1. The combination land relative arrangement, with the parts A'and B, of the screw C and rosette D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
`2. The combination of the semi-cylindrical parts a b, of the divided wrench A B, with the flanges or rings e, substantially as`and for the purposes set forth.
GEO. C. TAFT.
