FURNACE-TILE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE lV. VVoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaceliles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in furnace tiles and more particularly to tiles which are adapted to be supported against and between the lower set of tubes of a tubular boiler and constitute, not only baiiles but also to be heated to a high state of incandescence, so as to consume the otherwise waste products of combustion.
A further object is to provide improved tile or brick which will be so shaped that they may be readily positioned between the boiler tubes to be self-supporting on the boiler tubes, and which may be adjusted so as to regulate the area through which the smoke and gases from the fire box will pass.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a fragmentary View in section through a fire box, showing the boiler tubes in elevation, and illustrating my improved tile in position. Fig. 2, is a detailed perspective View of one of the tile, and Fig. 3, is a fragmentary plan view of the lower set of boiler tubes, with my improved brick or tile in position. Fig. i, is a viewin section on the line 4-, l, of Fig. 3.
1 represents the fire box or combustion chamber of an ordinary steam boiler furnace, and 2, are the boiler tubes disposed at an incline, and supported on the usual. bridge wall 3.
at, represents my improved tile or brick, one tile or brick being shown in perspective in Fig. 2.
By reference to Figs. 3, and a, it will be seen how the tile are assembled between the boiler tubes 2, each tile which is of general rectangular form, is provided in one face with a longitudinal groove or recess 5, curved in the are of a circle in cross section so as to fit snugly against the tube 2.
The tiles 4, are arranged back to back with their fiat backs engaging and their Specification of Letters Patent.

lVhile the grooves 5, might be located exactly in the vertical centers of the tile, I prefer to locate them slightly nearer the upper than the lower edges of the tile, thus rendering the lower portion of the tile slightly thicker to better withstand the intense heat to which they are subjected.
The tile or brick may be made of various refractory materials, but preferably of a material to withstand the greatest heat.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and altera- "ions as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with boiler tubes, of two longitudinal series of bricks interposed between parallel facing boiler tubes, and having grooved faces engaging the boiler tubes, and flat backs, said bricks arranged in staggered relation, with the flat backs of one series engaging the flat backs of the other series, and thebricks of each series spaced apart, substantially as described.
