JoHniuCLnon MURPHY, OFNEW YORK, N. Y., Assrenon To JAMES Lonti Y HER GRAHAhL'OF SAME PLACE..y
p Letters Patent No. 97,954, dated December ,14, 1869.
` The Schedule referred'to in these Letters Patent and. making part ofthe same.
. To all whom 'it 'may concern .-`r y Be it known that I, JoHN MoLEoD MURPHY, of
the city, county, and Stat-eef New York,` have invvented a new and improvedPacking-Case for Oil- Cans, intended vto apply to a can provided with my improved nozzle, for which a patent was granted 0ctober 19, 1869, No.,95,927 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which` willenable those skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to .the accompanying drawings, forming part oft-his speci'- ication. This invention relates to improvements in transportation-casestbr oil and other cans, to be used for the protection of the said cans, which are shipped full, and returned empty for refilling, and are consequently exposed to iujuryby rough handling, and otherwise.
The invention consists of an arrangement especially adapted for use with cans provided with an improved cut-off nozzle, which is the' subject of au application for a patent made by me, and bearing even date herewith, which said improvement `comprises the application to the ordinary` vertical nozzles, of a lateral spout, connected to the side, audvarranged to open an escapepassage for the contents when the said 'spout is turned into the right position, which position is that best f adapted for pouring from the can into vanother vessel,-
a'nd in which. the said-spout projects through a slot in` Idie side of the' packing-case enclosing it, the said case .being provided with an opening, and a door for closing the saine, adapted forit. u
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved can, and y Y Figure 2 represents a plan view, with a. part of the top broken oft'. i'
A'represeuts the t-iu packing-case,containing the oil or other substance, a1ul"`provided with the turning cutfoif spout G, attached to the vertical nozzle C, closed by a screw-cap, D, which, as these cans are at present constructed, must be removed for pouring out the `contents of the cans, and requires thattbe top, or
A a portion of the top of the exterior'packing-case be removed, whereas my improved nozzle requires only the opening of a small space in the side below the cover, and the spout projects so far beyond the side .of the case as to afford the best possible conditions for pouring from the nozzle C. y
E represents the exterior packing-case, which is made ot' wood, fitted to' the can snugly, and having the top screwed down tightly.
F represents a small door, fitted into a space cut out of one side at the upper edge, and extending from the corner, about halt' the length of the side where vit is hinged at G. v
When closed, it may he fastened at the corner by a screw, H, `in the ordinary way of fastening the other parts of the case, 'or by any other fastening.
Itis arranged relatively to the spout G, so that theA latter, when turned to open the passage for the contents,.will project through the space, (the door being `Opern) as represented in the dotted lilies at I, 4for pouring.
After pouring, the spout is turned back and the door closed under the edge of the cover.
This arrangement provides a very .cheaply-constructed aud durable case, which, Acombined with the cans for whiclrit is intended, constitutesA a very useful package for fluids. l
Having thus described my invention,
lVbat I claim as new, and desire to secure Aby Let- Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, JNO. F. Bnooxs.
