IMPROVEMENT IN YUT-OFI NOZZLE FOR CANS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.

To all whom' tt may concern;

Be it known that I, JOHN McLnoD MURPHY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Cut-Off Nozzle for Gans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description thereof, which, will enable those skilled in the 'art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide nozzles for shipping-cans, such as are used for packing and shipping'oils and other fluids, better adapt-ed for pouring out the contents than lthose now in use. 1

The invention consists of the application, to the vertical nozzles commonlyr applied to the cans at the top, and provided with screw-caps, which are removed both for illing and pouring the contents out, of a laterally-projecting tube 0r spout, arranged to rotate on the said nozzle, to be brought into coincidence with a hole in the side thereof, for pouring the contents ont through the said spout, or for turning it away and closing the said hole, by a ring encircling the nozzle,

and to which the spout is connected, the same being arranged to operate without removing the screw-cap e and especially adapted for pouring from the cans when enclosed in packing-cases of wood, a slot being. made in the side of the case below the cover, from which the spout may project when coincident with the hole in the nozzle. v

A represents the' common vertical nozzle rising from the top of the can, and having the screw-cap B, which lo this nozzle, preferably formed with a prominent ange, O,

and having a hole, D, at one side, for pouring out the contents, also a small vent-hole, E, at the opposite side, I fit, by spinning or otherwise, a cut-off ring or tube, F, having similar holes, and a laterally-project-l ing tube, G, fitted over the larger hole. This ring or tube F is designed to Iit suiciently tight to prevent the escape of the contents of the can when the passage D is closed, and it may have for this purpose any suitable packing-rings, interposed between the flanges at the ends, and the nozzle A, or otherwise suitably arranged.

The spout G serves asa handle for turning the cutolf tube F, which, beingturned on the nozzle so that the holes do not coincide', will cut oii the escape of the contents; but being turned so that they do coincide, furnishes a means of pouring out the contents, into any kind or form of receiver, with greater facility than it can be .done with the ordinary arrangement.' It is .also much more convenient for opening and closing.

Tile small vent-holes are intended to be arranged in such relation to the larger ones that they will admit thc air at the time of pouring.

These nozzles are especially useful in pouring from the cans when enclosed in wood packing-cases, slots being made in the sides thereof,through which the said tubes Gr will project when turned to the positionl for opening the passage.

Another advantage of this arrangement is, that when filled, and the passage cut off, the nozzles may be covered with capsules of tin-foil, revenue stamps, or other substance, so pasted or secured thereon that they cannot be turned Without rupturing the same, so as to give evidence of having been opened.

In iig. 3, I have represented the application of the improved nozzles to jugs, under an arrangement whereby the spout may be turned around and supported against the handles when closed.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f Packing-cans, for oils and other uids, provided With nozzles A, having the lateral holes D E and screw or other caps B, and the cut-oli` rings F an spouts G, all substantially as specified.
