Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2*?, 1910.
Application filed April 13, 1910. Serial No. 555,244.
i described.
The object of the invention is to provide a salt shaker in the form of a receptacle having the usual detachable perforated cap and provided upon its exterior with a sleeve or cylinder within which the said receptacle may reciprocate back and forth to a limited extent. By providing such a structure the said sleeve or cylinder may be used as a grip when the shaker is in use and as the body of the receptacle is free to move within the sleeve to the extent indicated, at each change of direction in the movement of the sleeve the receptacle will be brought against an end thereof and the force of impact between the receptacle and the sleeve will be sumcient to break any lumps of salt which form witliin the receptacle.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a vertical sectional view of the salt shaker.
The salt shaker includes a body or receptacle l to the open end of which is applied a screw -cap 2 having perforations 3. The lower portion of the cap extends down over the intermediate portion of the body l and terminates in a shoulder 4. A shoulder 5 is formed at the lower end of the body l and a sleeve 6 is located upon the body between the shoulders 4 and 5 and is shorter vertically than the distance between the said shoulders 4 and 5. The sleeve 6 is of such diameter as to fit snugly about the circumference of the body and is retained against detachment from the body by the said shoulders 4 and 5. The body l is provided in the vicinity of its lower end with a milled surface 7 which may be conveniently gripped and held when it is desired to unscrew the cap from the body or screwthe same in position upon the same.
From the above description it is apparent that when the body l contains salt or any other material which under certain conditions has a tendency to become lumpy and the sleeve is used as a handle grip and the shaker is subjected to the customary reciprocatory motion, the shoulders 4 and 5 will alternately come in Contact with the opposite ends of the sleeve 6 and thus subject the body to a certain amount of impact which will have a tendency to break up the lumps in the material therein.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is:
A shaker comprising a cylindrical con tainer having a basal offset annular shoulder, a cap detachably applied to the smaller end of the container and having a depending shoulder spaced from the first mentioned shoulder, and an annular movable hand hold surrounding the container between the basal shoulder and the cap shoulder and being less in length than the distance between said shoulders.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
STERLING P. ISBELL.
