UNITED sTATEs` PATENT oEFIoE; f
JOSEPH ORTHWEIN, 0F SUFFERN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR HAAS, 0F SUFFERN, NEW YORK.
0F ONE-HALF TO FIDEL TOOTH-BRUSH.
Speeication of Letters Patent.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ORTHWEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sulfern, in the county of Rockland and State of New `York, have invented a new and useful Improvementpin a Tooth-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brushes, theobject being to provide a tooth brush with a hollow hand-le adapted to contain a rubber tube for holding the liquid or paste, so that by squeezing the same, the liquid or paste therein will be forced on to the bristles of the, brush, -through passagesy `rformed therein.v
Another object of my invention is to provide a brush which is exceedingly simple -and cheap in construction, and one which is especially adapted to be used by traveling people, whereby a person having vone of these brushes'will .not be lcompelled to carry a bottle of liquid or paste, as the paste is held within the handle in such a manner that it will not leak out.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tooth brush which is exceedlngly simple and cheap in construction and one in which the parts are so connected, that the same can be readily 4disconnected in order to thoroughly clean the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a brush which is formed of a hollow handle having oppositely disposed openings through which the fingers can eX- tend for squeezing the liquid; containing tube therein, whereby the liquid will be forced out of the tube into a passage formed in the'head of the brush from which it is lcd' through passages on to the bristles, whereby the amount of liquidfed onto the bristles can be readily controlled.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel vfeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure l is a side elevation of my improved tooth brush. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the handle, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the rubber tube.
In carrying out my invention 'I emplov,
a; hollow handle A, formed of any suitable lmaterial having oppositely disposed finger -tube B having an annular rib or enlargement B at 1ts open end, adapted to fit against the shoulder of the handle, and to be clamped tightly by the threaded neck C of a head C, which is'screwed into the handle, so as to form a liquid tight joint.
The head C is providedf with a threaded opening C2, in which is secured a threaded neck 'D' of a brushh'ead D which is provided with bristles E, and a longitudinal passage .F having branch passages F', extending out between the bristles, through whichthe liquid or paste contained within the rubbertube is adapted to be forced by compressing the tube within the handl By constructing a brush in this manner the parts can be readily assembled, or disconnected, and by placing liquid or paste within the rubber tube and screwing the head down tightly, the tubewill be locked in thehandle, in such a manner that when compressed by the lingers, inserted through the opening, the liquid therein will be forced gradually out on to the bristles. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: n
A tooth brush ofthe kind described cornprising a tubular handle having oppositely disposed finger receiving openings and apertured end, the open end of said handle being 'annularly reduced internally to form a shoulder, said portion being threaded, a closed end rubber tube arranged in said handle having an annular rib, the enlargement at its open end engaging the internally Patented May 9, 1911. Application led May 31, 1910. Serial No. 564,270.
The closed end of the handle shoulder of said handle, a threaded neck being provided With bristles, and a longiarranged Witllin tle open nldof said handle tudinal passage having branch passages. engaging sai ri and o ing the same against the shoulder of the handle, said head JOSEPH ORTHWEN' being provided with a threaded opening, a Witnesses:
brush head provided with a threaded neck PHILIP E. CLARK,
secured in said opening, said brush head EVELYN E. HALDEMAN.
