Description

WILLIAM 'f L. MAY, or LINWooD,
a., ,at
ALABAMA, AssIGNoR To MAY.
WILLIAM J.
Letters'lateut N o. 97,945, dated December 14, 1869.
\ IMPRovED'MEcI-IANISM Fon DRIVING cotrToNGINs.
The `Schedule'referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern! l Be it known that'l, WILLIAM L. MAY, of Linwood,
`in thecounty of Pike, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Propelling Machinery of Cotton-Gins; and Ido hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of" the construction andoperationof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speeitcation, inrwhioh Figure 1 is aflongitudinal vertical section, and h`igure 2 is' a plan view. f This invention hasl for/its object vto e'ect such an arrangementofl machinery` as will enable a cotton-gin to be `run ata materially reducedexpense.
In the drawings- A is a timber aine,`which rests on the door of a gin-house, 4 l
A' is the band-wheehsuspended in hangers in the frame'A, and receiving motion from the horse or other power.
B is an additionalwheel, conveniently andeconomically constructed of pieces of.v plank, secured together in any suliicient manueig'in wooden or iron boxes, onthe frame A, above the bandewheel, with which itis connectedy by aband, a-.
The wheel 'B is also connected with, the gin by means of a band, b, passing around the gin-head b1, at the'opposite end of the flame A.
An idler-pulley, b2, placed beneath Ythe wheel B, and
within the band-b, sends the latter to the wheel at such an angle that it strikes the periphery ofthe lat'- d ter at the same transverse line as the band a.
The respective positions of the wheels and id1erpulley cause-them all to revolve together.
The wheel B is so much higher than the gin-head I 'that the band bexercises a downward pressure upon it. Anldwhereas the band-wheel was formerly directly connected with the ginhead, a larger `portion of the periphery of -the former was encompassed by the belt, and morefriotion was excited thansin the present arrangement.
Furthermore, therintervention of the wheel B gives the band-Wheel a Aleverage over the gin-head, propor tionate to the comparative size of the two.
Having thus described my invention,`
What I claim as new, and desire to seoure'by Letters Patent, is- I The combination ,of `the band-wheel AQ-M'beel B, idler-pulley bginhead b', frame A, and bands a b, all arranged substantially `as and for the purpose described."A
