Letters Patent No. 74,295, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOTIVE-POWER.
To AL'L WHOM IT MAY coNenmv:
Be it lrnow'n that I, ISAAC W. BROWN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved MotivePower; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exsct'description thereof, which will enablethose skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. V
This invention relates to a new and improved met-bod of propelling machinery of all kinds, and it is designed as asubstitute for steam, water, horse, or other motive-power for driving steamhoats, locomotives, and stationary machinery; and theinvention consists in applying the reacting force or power of India-rubberbelts or hands to that purpose, in the manner hereinafter described.
In. this example of my invention, the power is applied to -a clock-movemcnt; but this particular application -is made merely to showrand illustrate its adaptability to other purposes.
Figure 1 represents a back side view of o clock-movement which is operated by my improved power, showing the manner of its application to that purpose, and how it may be applied to other purposes on a large scale. Figure 2 is a side view of the. same, showing the drum and pulleys on which'the India-rubber band is Figural? is a front view of the same, showing the clock-escapement and the parts connected therewith.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. As far as regards the machinery or parts of this clock-movement, there is no novelty chimed. A represents the frame which supports the drum and wheel and arbors of the movement. B is the drum, which is made to revolve on the arbor or shaft 0, which drum is held by ri ratchet and pawl, b, seen in the drawing. The wheels and pinions, by which motion is imparted to the escapementflfare seen, marked 9, in the drawing. H represents the rubber spring, which is made of one or more strips or pieces of India rubber.
' .In practice, I have found that-a cluster of rubber cords or threads of greater or less diameter or size afl'ords the necess'ary elasticity and reactive force; but the rubber may be in any form which may be considered best ["adaptedto the purpose intended, either a cluster of cords, as represented in the drawing, or a cluster or combination of bands in. the form of rubber tape or ribbons or a single band or piece of rubber may be-employ'ed, maybe desired. In this description, it will be treated as a single band or belt. One end of this band is firmly attached to the drum B; and in its relaxed state the band. is carried over the loose pulleys .T J,'and the other end is firmly secured to a cross-bar, K, in the frame A, as seen in the drawing. This arrangement in the clock-movement allows of a great lepgth of belt, and consequently of a greater reservoir of power than a shorter band would. i
i In applying the power to driving machinery, or as a substitute for the steam-engine or other motive-power,
%the length of the band might be extended to any desiredlextcnt, thereby insuring a continuance of tho-reactive ,force for a period of time corresponding with the requirement of the service to be performed. When the rubber belt is thus securely fastened at each end, it is wound upon the drum B by revolving the same by the key, or by a crank, 91' in any convenient: manner, when the, power is applied on a larger scale.'
It will at course be understood that the amount of powerthus stored up will depend upon the tension given the bang, and that therec'oil or reaction oi the. baud acts directly upon the 'geanwheels of the machinery by revolving the drum-shaft 0, from whichlmotion and power are imparted,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The elastic-band H, in combination with the' gearing, substantially as herein described, for the purpose specified.
