No.150,990. PatentedMay19,1874.
I IIIIII 1 UNITED STATEs' PATENT QFFIGE,
JOEL TUFFORD, OF BEAMSVILLE, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN METAL-DRILLING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,990, dated May 19,1874; application filed November 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL TUFFORD, of the village of Beamsville, county of Lincoln, Province of Ontario, Canada, blacksmith, have invented certain Improvements in a Drilling- Maehine, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the combination, with the frame and drill-spindle, of mechanism for automatically feeding the drill to its work, the combination being such substantially as I will now proceed to describe, reference being made to the drawings hereunto annexed, which constitute part of the specification.
Near the drill-frame, which may be of cast or wrought iron, is a vertical counter-shaft, F, supported in brackets attached to the frame, which shaft is driven from a pulley, E, on the lower end of the drill-spindle A. On the center of said counter-shaft is a wide pulley, H, of varying diameter, having three or more grooves or flats upon its periphery, and running loose on its shaft; also, on the top of the counter-shaft is a large pulley, K, also running loose, into which, and wide pulley H, a double clutch locks, the clutch being thrown up or down by means of a lever, J, pivoted to the frame. 0n the upper end of the drill-spindle'A is a nut, which has, at its lower end, a wide pulley, O, of varying diameter, having three or more grooves or flats upon its periphery, and a small pulley, D, on the upper end, forms the upper journal and nut for the spindle of the drill. The wide pulley G, being driven by means of a belt from the wide pulley H on the counter-shaft, imparts a slow down feed; but the small pulley D, being driven by a belt from the large pulley K on the top of the counter-shaft, imparts to the spindle a rapid movement upward.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the upright shaft F, pulley G, wide pulley H, clutch I, large pulley K, forked lever J, drill-spindle A, nut B, wide pulley 0, small pulley 1), and pulley E, sub stantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
JOEL TUFFORD.
