Description
To all whom 'it may concern:
WILLIM'M. KEPLER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 97,930, dated December I4, 1869.
IMPRovnMnNT IN PUBLIC URInALs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I,'WILLIAM M. KnPLEmof Cincinnati,Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bublic Urinals; and I dohcreby declare thefollowing to he a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof, to enable one skilled' iny the art to which my invention appertains, to make andnse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this spe'cilication;` y i My invention relatesto that class of public urinals which `,is provided with adjustable shields,in` which `the urinal-bowl is enclosed;'and consists of such a construction of shield as will enable it to be opened and adj ustedby tlieoperator, easily, conveniently, and with one hand only; It is designed to remedy serious defects existing in, others of this class, whichrender them almost entirely inoperative for the purpose d esigned, owing to the diiculty of accomplishing the r'ev quired adjustment ofthe shield beforevthe urinal can be 'conveniently used.
In the accompanying drawings--` Figure 1 is a perspective view of a public nrinal, em# bodying my invention. 4
Figure 2 is a plan ofthe same in the enclosed position,th e position in which the urina-l and shield occupy 4but little of thestreetor alley.
Figure 3 is a'planof the same, in the position whenoccupied. y5 i A is the nrinal-howl, as ordinarily constructed, E
being the'water-supply pipe, Aand F the discharge-pipe, `covered by the customary guard.
The `adjustable shield Bris designed for the lsame purpose as others of this class, viz,to occnpy,'when notinuse, vbut little ofthe alley or street, and yet he' adapted, by change otijposition, to'enclose sufficient interior space for the comfortable occupancy of v the.
person using the nrinal. y
The peculiar construction of my improved shield is clearlyexhibited inail vthe gures.
It is composed of two part-s, b bf, hinged loosely toether at a, and to the wall ofthe building at c'.
The shield B is attached tothe wall by gravitating hinges,.as shown, to adapt it for closing automatically whennot in use; and in order that the entire shield 'may not present the appearance of being not vertically set, the outer or open end of the shield is cut tapering, to correspond with the hinged side. y
- To prevent the parts b b of the shield from doubling up backward, I attach the stop c, which limits the Aplay of the hinge, asshown.
A portion, b", of the part b' is out awa f, as shown, and a handle, C, is formed within it, inthe manner exhibited. This simple devicepermts of the hand ot' the operator being changed from the outside of the shield to the inside without'removal, and thus enables him to open the shield, walk behind it, and draw the 4part b after him, without removing the hand.
. -The shield B is adjusted to the position shown in iig. 3, in order to giveroom for a person' inside the "shield, and is retained in this position, while in use,
by means of' the stop D in the wall against which the shield rests.
When released from the stop D, and when the person using the urinal has vacated the interior of the shield, -it falls automatically, and takes the position The arrangement of the urinal A and curved shield' B, composed of two parts, b b', the said parts being hinged together at or near the centre of the shield, and the part b beingy provided with hinges c', for attachment of the shield to the wall, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
WM. M. KEPLER.
Witnesses:
FRANK MILLWARD, CHARLES K. PICKLEs.
