MATCH-BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNHARD J. L. BOLT, a subject of Denmark, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a. specification.

The invention relates to that class of match boxes fully set forth and described in my application for Letters Patent, Serial Number 524,457, filed in the United States Patent Oflice on the th day of October, 1909; the object of the present invention being to simplify the construction of the match box disclosed by the aforesaid application, to reduce the expense incident to the manufacture of a match box capable of re celvlng at one filling an entire box of matches, and at the same time to dispense j with the necessity of having to open full 1 the closing cover of the box in order to withdraw a match therefrom.

To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box closed and partly filled with matches. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the box with its hinged lids or cover plates partly opened. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box, illustrating a match as being extracted therefrom. Fig. l is a perspective view of the box viewed from its under surface.

In the drawings, the body of the box is illustrated as being composed of the bottom 1 and end walls 2, which are preferably struck or stamped from a single piece of suitable material. To the bottom 1 the side walls 3 and 4: are hinged, being held normally upward by the action of the springs 5. From the side walls extend respectively the lid or cover plates 6 and 7, which, in the present case, are formed integral with the

3 and 4;. These lid or cover plates are provided with the depending end flanges S, which, when the same are closed, embrace the end walls 2 and hold the same from spreading. To prevent the said end walls from being compressed, the

3 and 1 are formed with the inwardly extended shoulders 9, which bear against the inner face of the end walls 2 and hold the same from being forced inwardly, and at the same time serve as guards to keep the matches 10 within the box from slipping Specification of Letters Patent.

; A portion of each lid or cover plate is rel moved, so that when the said plates are closed a finger opening 11 is formed, through which the thumb and fore finger are inserted 1 when a match is to be withdrawn from within the box. As the match is raised, the end portions of the same bear against the under face of the hinged lid or cover plates and causes one or both of the same to move upwardly and separate sufliciently to permit of the match passing outwardly between the free edges of the lid or cover plates, which, at the moment the match has been extracted, return to normal or closed position, due to the action of the springs 5.

In order to fill the box, the lid or cover plates are swung upwardly their full distance by the pressure of the thumb and forefinger acting thereagainst, when an entire box of matches may be turned into the box as of one operation. The hand or finger pressure being then released, the lid 6r cover plates are then restored to normal position by the action of the springs 5, acting against the

It will be observed that the box may be easily filled with matches at one operation, and the matches quickly extracted there from as desired for use.

To enhance the appearance of the box and to serve a useful purpose, there is secured to the outer face of the bottom wall 1, a mirror 12, Fig. 4 of the drawings.

While preference is given to forming the lid or cover plates 6 and 7 and the side walls 8 and at integral, and hinging the side walls to the bottom of the box, it is obvious that the side wall may be formed integral with the bottom and end walls, and the lid or cover plates hinged to the upper edge of the side walls. This is a detail of construction, which in no manner causes a departure from the invention.

The described pocket match box is to be constructed in sizes to correspond to the length of the standard matches, so as to adaptthe invention for commercially used matches. Inasmuch as the width of the box is considerably less than its length and of the matches to be placed therein, there is no danger of the matches jamming therein by turning cross-wise of the box.

Having; thus described the invention what l is claimed as new and desired to be protectt ed by Letters Patent is 1. A pocket match box, the same comprising a bottom and integral end walls stamped from a single sheet of material, side walls hinged to the outer edge of the bottom of the box, springs acting; against said side walls for normally holding the same upwardly, shoulders projecting from the side walls to bear against the inner face of the end walls, a lid or cover plate carried by each side wall, the said plates being" proyided with cut outs to form a finger opening when the same are closed, and flanges depending from the lid or cover plates for cmltiraeing the end walls.

(3. A match safe adapted to receive an ordinary box of matches, the same comprising a substantially rectangnlar shaped bottom plate having upwardly bent portions at its ends constituting the ends of the box, oppositely disposed side sections hinged directly to the bottom section at the sides thereof so as to swing from a point in contact with said ends to a point outwardly therefrom, said side sections being longitudinally bent so as to provide overlying top sections, wnich said top sections each hare registering substantially semi-circular openings constituting finger openings, the said side sections hayin inwardly bent ends arranged to engage the inner surface of the end sections, and said top sections having downwardly bent sections arranged to en-' page the outer surface of said end sections, substantially as shown and specified.
