IMPROVEMENT IN BLOTTINGPADS.
The Scheduletreferred t`in these Letters Patent and making part of the saine.
To all whom it may concern: i
* Be it known that I, G. A. GALn, of Demopolis, in
the county of Marengo, and State .of Alabama, ,have
invented a new and improved Rolling Blotter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,'whieh will enable others skilled in theart to makeand use the same', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification. v v
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved rolling blot ter. Q
'Figurefl is an end view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail cross-secltion of the cylinder, taken through the line z x fig. l.

My invention.` has for its objgct to furnish an improved rolling blotter, which sliall be so const ructed and arranged that the blottng-pads may be conveniently removed when required, and replaced with new ones; and
It consists in the construction and. combination of the various parts of the blotter, as hereinafter more fully described, i
' A is the hollow cylinder', which may be made of any suitable material, and which is made in two parts hinged to each other at one side of' the cylinder, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. v
llhe parts of the cylinder A, when closed, are se! cured in place by the catches or latches B, pivotedto the ends of one part of the cylinder A, and catching upon pins or catches C attached to the other part of said cylinder. l vSeveral notches are formed upon the latches B, so
that they may catch upon the said pins C, and hold securely, whateverbe the thickness of the blotting-pad placed upon the cylinder. ,i
The forward ends of the latches B are bevelled off, and they are held down by springs-D, so that they may catchupon the pins C automatically, when the parts of the cylinder are forced together'. The latches B are held up against the ends of the cylinder A, by straps, as shown inlg. 2. I
`To the middle points ofthe'ends of the cylinder A,
are attached Apivots which enter and revolve in holes in the ends ofthe arms ofthe branched handle E.
F is theblotting-panl, one end of which is inserted in the space between the bar af, and the inner surface of one edge of one of the parts ofthe cylinder The pad 14 is then passed around the `outer surface of the cylinder A, and its other end is bent inover the edge of the other part of said cylinder, which edge may be serrated to enable it to take a rmer hold upon the blotting-pad. f
The cylinder is then closed, clamping the ends of the blotting-pad between the edges of the said cylinder,
and holding the said padsecurely drawn around the` outer surface ot' the cylinder A.
By this construction, when the .blotting-pad F has become soiled from use, it may be easily detached and replaced by a new one. i
G is a spring, one end of which is attached to one of the parts of the cylinder A, near its hinged edge, and the other end of which rests against the inner surface of the other part of said cylinder near its hinged edge, so that when the spring-fastenings B C D arev unfastened, the spring Gr may force the parts of the cylinder apart, allowing thel blotting-pad F to be conveniently detached.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl 1. Forming the cylinderA, to which` the blottingpad is attached, in'two segments hinged to eachother at one edge, and securedto each other when closed by the spring-latches B C D, or equivalent fastenings, substantially as herein show n and described, and for thepurpose set forth.
2. The spring-fastenings B G D, constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the hinged parts ofv the cylinder A, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 30th day of August, 1869. l
