Description
D. SAKS;
METALLIC BED PAN. APPLICATION FILED APB.21, 1919.
Patented Dec. zo, 1910.
M m mi ATTORNEY the yupper section of the pan.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID SAKS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METALLIC BED-PAN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID SAiis, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Bed-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved form of bed pan of the general type disclosed by United States Letters Patent No. 84947 2 issued April 9th, 1907. In the form of bed pan shown and described in this patent the spout is secured to the lower of the two main sections of which the pan is formed. This construction necessitates not only the use of a spout of considerable length but also involves the formation of a seam at the point where the spout is joined to the lower section. The spout, after some use, has a. tendency to work loose, and inasmuch as the lower section of the bed pan is the receptacle proper leakage therefrom cannot be prevented, and thus the desired sanitary eect of the bed pan is to a large extent defeated.
One object of my invention is to produce a bed pan from which this undesirable featureiseliminated, and this purpose I accomplish by forming the spout in or upon As a result, of this construction the lower section is entirely seamless, preventing leakage, and enabling the bed pan to be readily emptied and cleaned, and also permitting it to be used as a douche pan, inasmuch as the rubber tube and connections employed for this purpose may be easily inserted into the spout. When the spout is formed in the upper pan section as suggested, it may be and preferably is considerably shorter than when formed in the lower section, and thus a decided saving in material is effected.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a cover which shall be so constructed as to cover the spout opening as well as the opening in the bed pan placed under the body of the invalid, and which cover shall be provided with a suitable handle to enable the cover to be easily used.
One embodiment of the invention is illus trated in the accompanying drawing, where- 1n- Figure l is a top plan view of 'my im- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

proved form of bed pan with the cover in position, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
' The pan 'is constituted of a lower section l and an upper section 2 suitably joined together by the seam 3, each of the sections being preferably of the form illustrated. The upper section at approximately its central portion has formed therein the opening 4, and secured in any suitable manner to the inclined wall 5 of the upper section 2 is a spout 6, which is preferably comparatively short and inclined in a direction away from the bed pan. As will be noted from Fig. 2 of the drawing the upper edge of the spout stands a little higher than the upper edge of the opening 4 and for the purpose of closing these openings when desired I' provide a suitable cover having a covering member 7 adapted to lie over the opening 4, a second -covering member 8 adapted to close the spout, and a handle 9 connecting the members 7 and 8 thus uniting the two covering members as a unitary structure.
In addition to the advantages mentioned above of a structure such as described, it
will be noted that my improved pan is easily y emptied, it being possible to relieve the pan of all its contents very quickly, and by placing the spout in the upper section of the pan means are also afforded for enabling the attendant to look through the spout into the pan and see that all parts of its interior are thoroughly cleansed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a bed pan of the character described, the combination with a seamless lower section, of an upper section united thereto and provided with an opening at approximately its central portion, a short spout in the upper section, and a `cover disconnected from the bed pan and comprising a member for closing the spout, a second member for closing said opening and an intermediate handle for uniting said members as a unitary structure.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID SAKS.
