JOSEPH RANYAK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PADIIOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1910.
Application led September 1, 1910. Serial No. 580,098.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH RANYAK-, a subject of the King of Hungary, residmg at Detroit7 in the county of W'ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specilicatlon, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in padlocks and is designed to form a sateguard against tampering therewith by lts form as well as by its character and to this end the invention consists in a combination padlock having the outward form of a pistol all as more fully described hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the padlock; Fig. 2 a detached perspective view of one of the tumblers; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of Fig. 1 on line :1r-0a.
Referring to the drawings A is the shackle of the padlock pivotally secured at a in a casing B which 1n connection with the O'rip C forms in appearance the stock of a plstol with the shackle in the position of and simulating the hammer of the pistol.
In the :forward end of the casing is secured the round bar D which forms the support for a series of ring shaped tumblers E sleeved upon the bar and held in position thereon by a collar F secured on the end of the bar and representing in connection with the tumblers the barrel of the pistol. A locking bolt composed of the heads G and H and the shank I slidingly engages in a longitudinal groove J in the supporting bar D and is provided with a series of wards K one for each tumbler. The tumblers are provided interiorly with annular channels L Y to receive the wards and permit the tumblers to be rotated and with a passage-way M adapted to be registered with the groove J.
The head of the locking bolt is adapted to engage with the notch N in the shackle' and the head H impinges against the inner end of a lever O pivotally secured in the casing below the shackle. A coil spring P secured under tension at its opposite ends to the locking bolt and to an extension R on 'the shackle draws the heads G and H into engagement with the shackle and lever respectively. Each tumbler has printed or impressed upon it letters or characters one of which (known to the operator only) if placed in yalinement with a fixed mark provided on a stationary part will register the passage-ways M with the groove J s0 that by a joint alinement of these letters or charactors the locking bolt is rendered free to be pushed out of engagement with the shackle by pressing upon the lever as in the act of tiring the pistol and the shackle will spring open by the tension of the spring I).
My construction provides a simple and handy padlock of the keyless type, and its pistol like appearance gives it additional security against tampering especially by night prowlers, chicken thieves and the like in whom it would naturally arouse suspicion of danger.
I claim as my invention:
1. A padlock comprising a casing, a lever pivotally secured in said casing, a shackle pivotally secured in the casing, a series of tumblers at the end of the casing, a round bar secured to the casing and forming the support of the tumblers, a locking bolt slidingly engaging in a groove of said support and provided with wards coperating with said tumblers to lock and unlock t-he locking bolt, two heads on the locking bolt one to engage the free end of the shackle, and the other to engage with the lever, and a sp1-'ing under tension connecting the locking bolt with the shackle.
2. A padlock comprising a casing, a shackle pivoted in said casing, a lever pivoted in said casing, a series of tumblers, a round bar secured to the casing and rotatively supporting the tumblers in position thereon, a locking bolt having a shank slidingly engaging in a groove of the supporting bar and provided with Wards coperating with the tumblers to lock and unlock said locking bolt, heads on said locking bolt engaging respectively the free end of the shackle and the inner end of the lever and a spring under tension connecting the lockin bolt with an extension on the pivoted en of the shackle.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH RANYAK.
