SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,389, dated August 22, 1899.
Application tiled September 3, 1898. Serial No. 690,211. (No model.)
To @ZZ who/1t it 'nw/y concern:
Beit known that 1, WILLIS M. THOMPSON, a resident of Marquette, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in locks, and more especially' to that class known as padlocks The primary object of myinvention is to produce a lock that will be impossible to pick and difficult to duplicate a key with which it may be operated.
Afurther object is to produce alock having a number of tumblers that may be set in Various combinations and a key that may also be set to correspond with the combination of the lock in such manner that it' an attempt to open the lock is made with other than its corresponding key it will become engaged and impossible to remove to attempt further inanipulation.
Illustrations of a lock embodying my in vention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side view of a padlock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is acrosssection. Fig. 4 is a detail of one ot the tumblers. Fig. 5 is a plain View and section through the key.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, I will now explain my invention.
A is a shell or casing provided at one en'd with apertures for the reception of shackle B and at the opposite end is internally threaded to engage with threads on core G, which carries a knob c and a key-guide c', which terminates in a disk c2, both the disk and shell A being slotted to receive the shackle-arms b.
Passing through the key-guide c is a rotating slotted guide D, which is iianged at its outer end, the iiange being countersunk in the knob cand held in place by a pin d, passing through the disk c2 and engaging with a countersunk nut or washer d. Arranged on shafts E on either side of the key-guide are the tumblers F. Projections fon the tumbler-s F project normally into 'slots f in the key-guide c and are adapted to engage with the lugs h of the key. vOpposite these projections f are the tumbler-locking arms f2, which engage with notches b' in the shackle-arms h.
In order to hold the tumblersF in the notches b' of the shackle-arms b, I have provided springs G, which are attached to the shafts E and press against the head of the pin g, fixed in the side of the locking-armsfz.
In order to arrange combinations of the tumblers, it is necessary to hitch back one or more of them, so that they will not operate.
For this purpose the spring-hooks g2 are fastened to the edge of the key-guide c, extending in such manner as to engage the pin-head g when the tumblers F are pressed down to the side of the key-guide c', as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The keyE consists of a shank slotted to receive dovetailed slide h, which retains the movable lugs h', as shown. These lugs are provided with dovetailed and beveled heads that tit in suitable slots in the sides of the shank, and when placed in position the slide h is inserted and locks these in position. The object in having the lugs made' movable is to enable suitable combinations to be made to correspond with the combinations made with the tumblers in the lock proper. To change or'set the combinations of the lock, as is evident, the case is removed.
To operate or lock and unlock, the combinations of the lock and those of the key are setto correspond or register and the rotating guide D set so that the slot in the knob oregisters with the slot in the key-guide c', thus .allowing the key to be inserted its full length,
when the lugs 72, of the key'will register with the slots f' in the key-guide c andV through them Will engage the projections f on the tumblers F when the key is turned to the limit, thereby throwing the locking-arms f2 in and out of engagement with the notches b in the arms of the shackle, securing and releasing it as desired. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In a padlock the combination with a case and shackle, of spring-pressed tumblers F disposed on shafts E parallel with the arms l; of said shackle B adapted to be moved thereon and set to register with an d engage the notches b' in said shackle-arms b, an outer key-guide c' adjacent. to said iuinblers F having slots into which lugs on said tumblers may extend and engage the lugs of the key, a secondary key-guide extending through the said outer guide c' rotatably therein, spring-hooks attached to the sides of the said outer guide adapted to engage the pin-heads g in the tumblers F when said tuinblers are pressed inward and against the said outer key-guide c', thereby holding said tumblers out of engageinout with the notches in said shackle-arms, and a key Composed of a shank having.,r a number of removable lugs and a dovetailed slot and slide adapted to look said lugs in position in said shank substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
ln witness whereof I have signed this Specification, in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses, this 30th day of July, 1898.
