Letters Patent No. 97,808, at; December 14,1869.
. I IMPROVED CONVERTIBLE END-BOARD AND PLATFORM FOR, WAGONS- 'i'he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS" 'l. POWELL and J can F. Bunnouens, ofLawn Ridge, in'-the county of Marshall, and in theStat e of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Boards for Wagons andOarts, 8:70.; and do herebydcc-lare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like lettersof reference refer to like parts, and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view. I Figure 2, perspective view of the gate or end-board opened, with platform or extension of wagon-bottom in place.
Figure 3, plan of gate or endboard, a nd that portion of wagon. w 1
Figure 4, elevation of end of wagon-gate and platform-stay; a e v This invention relates to the use of a double gate,
a .in place of the ordinary end-board ofa wagon; also, a
sliding horizontal platform, or extension of the wagonbottom, which, together, form a platform and sides, for the convenience of shovelling or unloading produce of various kinds, or articles generally carried in bulk.
The seat of the wagon is reversed, and forms the platform in question;
A is the wagon-body.
B is a horizontal platform, which is also the seat of the wagon, whose 'length is of the same width as that ol the wagon-bed.
This seat and end-board has a bar, 0, fastened to each end,'and. paiallel therewith, projecting several inches beyond the edge which closeswith the wagouend or bed, each fitting into one of the sockets or inortisesfj, cut in the transverse bar g, under the end of the wagon-bed.
This board has a staple or hook, it 7., or equivalent device, for the purpose of securing the ends of the gates O I), when opened, to form sides for the board a or platfori The bars '6 c, besides forming a support for the endboard, also act asstays or cleats, to keep the board, whenrused as the wagon-seat, from sliding so as to i fall.
0 D are two gates, or divisions of theend of the wagon, each hinged vertically. at their outer edges to the wagon, and having straps of malleable iron running along their upper and lower edges, and terminating at the joint or union of the meeting-edges of the gates, in eyes (1' (l d d, which receive a vertical bolt or rod, i, which passes through them all into the wagonbed below, where a socket and thread may receive and secure the-thread on the end of the rod.
Vertical braces, a a, are screwed, one on either gate, at such a distance from the hinged edge of each asto make a good abutment against the end of the sideboard of the wagon when the gates are opened. (See figs. .2 and 3.)
- The meeting edges of the gates may be recessed or lapped, as shown in drawings, so -as to secure the small grain, 850., from escaping.
Staples or hooks k k, or equivalent the gates (when opened) to the platform B.
The whole forms a strong, compact, and good plan for the unloading of articles carried in bulk, the platform 13' afterward being replaced as a seat, as shown in fig. 1.
Ne claim, as our invention v 1. The useand construction of the board B, both as a platform or wagon-bed extension, and as a wagom seat, with its staples or hooks k is, or equivalent fastenings for the gates, and the bars e e, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the above, the gates C D, with their straps 1) 1) b b and eyes dd (1 ll, secured by the rod '5 and auxiliary recess 1, the the transverse bar g, with its recessesor niortisesj'f,
all substantially as described, and for the purposes hereinahove stated.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 29th day of "September,
