SINGLE HARNESS.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN SIDEY, of the village of Bewdley, in the county of Northumberland, Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Single Harness, of which t-he following is a specification.

This invention relates to single harness and my object is to devise means for hitching a horse without the use of long traces. I also aim to make the operation of hitching up as simple and `convenient as possible and to make the harness as easy as possible on the horse.

I attain my object by securing a suitable eye to each shaft into which may be hooked a spring draft hook connected to a short trace. A metal plate is provided to which are connected straps leading` to the breeching, the back `band and the belly band re- The eye passes through a slot in the plate and the hook engaging the eye serves to hold the plate in place.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of parts of a single harness constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the shaft connection and spring draft hook. Fig. 3 is a vertical Fig. 4 is a face view of the plate to which the harness straps are connected. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the shaft protector used in the shaft ring.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.

A is the vehicle shaft shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

B is a ring adapted to slip on the shaft and adjustably clamped thereon by means of a set screw C formed as a screw eye. The flanged plate D is tted in'I the ring to protect the shaft from injury by the end of t-he screw.

E is a metal plate having a slot a formed therein through which the eye O may be passed. This plate is suitably slotted for connection with a strap F leadingl to the back band a strap Gr leading to the belly band a strap I-I leading to the breeching. IVith the screw eye O the spring draft hook I may loe-engaged as shown. This draft hook is connected at its' other end with a Speccation of Letters Patent.

short trace J. The draft hook comprises a shell in which is inelosed a coil spring K. One end of the coil spring engages the end of the shell and the other is engaged by the stem b of the hook 0. A hinged ring l is provided on the other end of the hook for connection with the traces. The whole forms a spring draft hook of ordinary construction.

The arrangement is used as follows: The ring B is placed on the shaft and secured thereto in the proper position. IVhen the horse is to be hitched up after the harness is placed on the horse and the latter backed into the shafts, the eye O is passed through the slot a in the plate E.` The draft hook is then hooked into position. The draft hook it will be seen serves to retain the plate E in position. By this arrangement the long traces are done awa with and the draft is applied directly to t e shafts. As Ieinploy a spring draft hook all jerk on the collar is avoided and the horse allowed the same freedom he has when ordinary long traces and Whittie tree are em loyed.

The attachment eing iliade of metal may be cheaply manufactured; it is also strong, safe and durable and saveslabor in hitching and unhitching the horse.`

What I claim as my invention is 1. In harness, the combination of an eye adapted for connection to a shaft; a plate.

2. In harness, the combination of a ring provided with a set screw whereby it may be clam ed upon a shaft; an eye formed on the head of the set screw; a plate having a slotl therein through which said eye passes, the plate bein also adapted for connection to a belly-bang, a back-band and breeehing; a draft hook adapted to hook into said eye and adapted also to be connected with a short trace.
