ROBERT BEALE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
HARNESS FOR HORSES IN SHAFTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 2.37, dated June 15, 1837'.k
Y 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT BEALE, of the city of lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented an Improvement in Harness for Horses Going in Shafts, which improvement is applicable to vehicles of different kinds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof. y l
In Figures l and 2, in the accompanying drawing, A, is the pad, or saddle, and B, the back band, or saddle tug, through a loop, C, in the lower part of which the shaft D, passes, in the ordinary way. On the top of the saddle, I place a metal standard the bottom plate of which, E, is firmly attached to it, and from this rise vertical pieces F, F, F, through holes in which a spring bolt G, passes, having a loop, or eye, at its end, H, to which a leather thong, or strap, I, is attached, by means of which the bolt, G, when necessary, may be instantaneously drawn out.
J, is the hook for the check rein.
The back band, or saddle tug, B, is divided into two parts, and on the upper end of each half of it I fix a metal link K, K, each having a` hole through it to receive the bolt G; and when these links are in their places, with the bolt through them, the shafts will be supported in the same manner as by the usual bands, or tugs; but if the bolt be drawn out, the back band, or tug, will descend, until the link, K, comes into Contact with the staple, L, and the shafts will also descend to the same distance.
The drawing trace, M, terminates at N,
it not being, usually, more than one-third the length of an ordinary trace. Its back end is supported by a strap, O, which passes over the back of the horse. On each shaft shown, in part, separately in Fig. 8. where D is the shaft, and S, the belly band, which may be attached, by a buckle, to the main belly band, or it may itself pass entirely round from one trace staple to the other.
The thong, or strap, I, extends back, hanging loosely, and is hooked in any convenient way to the front of the vehicle so as to be within reach ofthe'driver, who, by taking hold of it, can, in a moment, draw out the bolt Gr, when the back band, or saddle tug, and, consequently, the shafts, will descend, freeing the tug plate, P, from the trace staple Q, and thus entirely'disengaging the horse from the carriage, without the embarrassment and danger resulting from the ordinary traces, swingle tree, or breeching, neither of which need be used in this harness.
Having thus fully described my improved harness, and the manner in which the same is to be used, I hereby claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent- Y The mode of constructing the within described apparatus, by means of which the shown.
ROBERT BEALE, Witnesses:
T Hos. P. JONES, G. W. Woon.
