Be it known that I, RICHARD O. BARLER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in sounding toys, and more particularly to that class in which a paper diaphragm is ruptured by the sudden compression of air,the object of my present invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and cheap in construction and capable of holding a strip of paper which can be easily fed forwardly by the user after each operation of the device.

With this object in view the invent-ion consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a sounding toy embodying my improvements.- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the handle portion of the device.

1 represents a plate or strip which may be conveniently made of sheet metal and form the handle portion of the device. At its forward end the plate or strip 1 is provided with an opening 2 and in rear of the forward end, the plate or strip 1 is provided at its side edges with depending lugs 3 and between the side edges, the plate may be made with strengthening ribs 4. The depending lugs 3 serve to pivotally support an annulus 5, the latter being provided with lugs 6 connected with the lugs 3 by means of suitable pivot pins 7. In order to limit the movement of the annulus relatively to the forward end of the plate or strip 1, thelugs 3 are so shaped that they will engage said annulus adjacent to the lugs 6 thereon.

The upper open end of a collapsible bulb 8 of rubber or other suitable material is passed through the annulus 5 so as to project slightly above the upper edge of the latter and this bulb is secured to the annulus Specification of Letters Patent.

the yielding open end 10 of said bulb will operate as a cushion or gasket to press the paper tightly against the under face of the plate 1 around the opening 2 in the latter so that when the bulb is collapsed by striklng the same against an object there will be no possibility for any appreciable escape of air between the contacting faces of the plate and bulb with the paper and consequently the paper will be ruptured by the sudden compression of air in the bulb and a report of considerable volume will result.

The plate or handle portion 1 of the device is provided along its longitudinal edges with downwardly and inwardly turned flanges 11 which form guides for a strip of paper and the said plate or handle portion 1 is made with an elongated slot 12 to permit the user to grasp the strip of paper and feed the same forwardly after each operation of the device, to present an unruptured portion of paper strip between the open end of the bulb and the perforated forward portion of the plate 1. The slot 12 is preferably of such length that when the operator grasps the paper strip and moves it a distance equal to the length of said slot, he will feed a sufficient amount of paper to extend over the opening of the bulb and under the opening 2 at the forward end of the plate 1. The slot 12 thus serves as a gage to regulate the proper feeding of the strip.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle portion provided near one end with an opening and a collapsible bulb having movable connection with the handle portion and open under the perforated portion of said handle portion, of means 011 said handle portion for supporting a strip of paper and guiding it between the open end of the bulb and the opening in the handle portion.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle portion provided with an opening near one end, of an annulus movably connected with said handle portion near the inner side of said opening and free of the handle portion at the outer side of said opening, a collapsible bulb having an open end, the open end of the bulb projecting upwardly beyond the upper face of the annulus to form a cushion, and means securing the bulb to the annulus.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate having an opening near one end and provided with lugs near the inner side of said opening, of an annulus having lugs pivotally connected with the lugs on the plate, and a bulb secured; tosaid annulus and having an open end disposed under the opening in the forward portion of said plate, the lugs on the plate cooperating with the annulus to form stops for the latter. 5

Ina device of the character described, the combination of a handle portion provided with means for supporting and guiding, a strip of paper and provided. near its forward end with an opening, a bulb movably supported at the forward end of the handle portion and having an opening in line with the-opening at the forward end of said. handle portion.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate provided: at its side edges with guides for a strip of paper and provided near its forward end with an opening of a bulb movably supported under the forward end of said plate and provided,

with an opening to aline with the openingin said plate.

6. In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a plate provided at its side edges with guides for a strip of paper and having an elongated slot between said side. edges, said plate also provided near its forward end with an opening, an annulus pivotally supportedin rear of the opening in the forward portion of said plate, and a collapsible bulb supported by the annulus and having an opening to aline with the opening in the forward portion of said plate.

7 In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle portion provided with means for supporting and guiding a strip of paper, said handle having an openingnear one end and also having a slot to permit the paper to be grasped and fed forwardly under the opening in the forward part of said handle-portion, and a bulb movably supported by said handle portion and having an opening under the openingin the forward part of said handle portion.
