MAX DAVIDSON,- or OGDEN, UTAH.
BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
Application filed March 23, 1910. Serial No. 551,034.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Max DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ogden, in the county of lVeber and State of Utah, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for retaining box lids in position for display purposes and also for lifting the boxes, and it con sists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is, as stated above, to provide a device for holding in position the lids of boxes, such as cigar boxes, when placed in a showcase, such device being capable of instant attachment to the lid without the use of any tools.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which will hold the lid at varying angles and which has a sliding part capable of being moved so as to permit the cover to be lowered without interfering with the remaining boxes in the case.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for lifting a box from its position without interfering with the remaining boxes in the case.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a ortion of a box with my invention app ied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the opposite side of the device from that shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide a clip which consists preferably of a single piece of metal A. This piece of metal has a portion a. stamped from one side of the main body portion and bent into the form shown in the drawings. The main body portion is bent back upon itself at a and is provided with the integral spring extensions B and C, both of the latter being slightly curved outwardly from the main body portion near their ends. The sliding member consists of a fiat strip of metal D curved at its opposite end at (Z to provide a finger-hold. This strip D is placed between the stamped portion a on one side and the body portion A on the other. At the bottom of the is secured a lug or stop E.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The holder is applied in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the spring arms B and G being sprung over the lid of the box. The tension of the spring arms is suflicient to keep the device in place.
In setting the lid for show purposes the end of the slide D is permitted to engage the side of the box in the manner shown in Fig. 1.' Since the cover is inclined the slide will support the cover. The inclination of the cover may be varied by pulling the slide upwardly and tilting the lid or cover backward until the lower edge of the slide comes in contact with the side of the box. A box lid thus supported will remain open and since the slide lies close to both the lid and the side of the box the device takes up very little room.
Now when it is desired to lift the box from its position without disturbing the restrip D maining boxes in the case, the curved por-,
tion (Z is grasped and the slide is lifted vertically until the lug E comes in contact with the lower edge of the stamped portion a. The box then may be lifted without disturbing any of the other boxes inthe case. On the spring arm C is a flange 0 upon which may be placed a card or price mark.
It will be understood, of course, that the opposite side of the box may be provided with a similar holder so as to have two supports and handles if desired. l/Vhen it is desired to shut the box the slide is pulled upwardly until the lug E engages the stamped portion a and then the lid is lowered. Since there is no rearwardly projecting portion all of the boxes may be closed without interfering with the other boxes in the case.
The device is of simple construction, being made in two pieces.
I claim:
A lid holder and handle comprising a stationary member consisting of a single piece of metal having a body portion, a pair of integral spring arms bent back upon the body portion, one of said spring arms having a lateral flange and a stamped portion bent out of the plane of the main body portion, a strip of metal slidably carried be- I (the box for supporting the lid in varied intween said stamped portion and said main dined positions. body portion, said strip having a curved l upper end and being provided with a lug I on its lower end arranged to engage one edge of the stamped portion and adapted to be moved in position for engaging the side of MAX DAVIDSON.
