clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pen holders, more particularly to the class of pen holders wherein provision is made for ejecting the pen point without danger of staining the fingers of the writer, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.

lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device with the pen point in position relative to the holder. Fig. 2 is a 1011- gitudinal section of the improved device, with the device in position to eject the penpoint. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, enlarged, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View, enlarged, of the ferrule detached.

In the improved device is comprised a handle 10 reduced at one end as at 11 and with one face of the reduced portion cut away at a relatively long incline as shown at 12, and with the face of the reduced portion at the side opposite to the inclined portion cut away at a slight angle as shown at 13. Fitting over the reduced portion 11 of the handle is a split ferrule represented as a whole at 14 and cut away at one end as shown at 15 to conform to the cut away portion 12 of the handle. At its butt end the sides of the ferrule are eX- tended in the form of two laterally extended lips 1617. The ferrule is formed of resilient metal, so that it is adapted to engage the handle with sufficient tenacity to hold the pen point in position when inserted, but which w1ll yield to aforce applied to rotate the handle upon the ferrule. The inclined portion 13 produces a slight cavity where the pen point is .inserted, the latter represented at 18, the inclined portion providing for the-ready insertion of the pen point. With a device thus constructed when the pen point is to be inserted the ferrule is turned with the inclined faces 1516 registering as shown in Fig. 1, and the pen point inserted between the members 11-1 1- in the ordinary manner. The device is then in condition for use, and the pen point will be held with sufficient force for this purpose. In eventof the breakage or impairment of the pen point the writer holds the handle with one hand and rotates the ferrule 14: to bring the cut away portion 15 of the ferrule opposite the solid portion of the handle, which action releases the pen point and permits it to drop, the pen point being thus ejected without the necessity for the writer touching the same with the fingers. The projections 16-17 provide an effectual grip for the fingers of the writer in rotating the ferrule, and are therefore an important feature of the invention.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be applied to handles or stocks of various kinds, and to stocks formed from various substances or material, and may be readily adapted to pen points of various sizes and forms without material structural changes.

What is claimed is In a pen-holder a penstock having a relatively large cut-away portion at one side at its outer end and with a relatively small cutaway portion opposite the larger cut-away portion, a divided ferrule mounted for rotation upon said penstock and with a cutaway portion corresponding to the larger cut-away portion of the same, said ferrule having its terminals directed outwardly to form finger grips, said smaller cut-away portion of the penstock adapted to facilitate the insertion of the butt end of a pen-point.
